The Mountaineers were overpowered in the opening seconds of the game, as Kevin McCabe ran in a 25 yard TD with Dennis Stefani running the needed 3 yards to add another 2 points. The Cards scored twice more before the Long Creek team found the goal line in the second quarter. A Stefani to Robin LaRue four-yard pass and a two-yard pass to Dan McElli gott, with LaRue running in for extra points, made the ' score 22-0. The Mountaineers complet ed a nine-yard pass and ran in a conversion to reach paydirt lone Jr. Highgridders overpower Riverside Ione's junior high football season started on a positive note, with the junior Cards winding up firmly in the win column in a contest against Stanfield. Six lone players each reach ed paydirt during the game. Those scoring were Denny Starr, Tim Patton, Howard Leavitt, Craig Hams, Donnie Taylor, and Vince McElligott. While scoring a total of 60 points, the fledging Cardnials held Stanfield to 20. Coach Jerry Martin said he was pleased with his team's blocking and tackeling in addition to obvious scoring capabilities. "The players showed that we have pretty good football team," he said. The lone Junior High squad should have its hands full today, Thursday, when it meets Riverside,, at Board-man. for the first time this season, making it 22-8. lone came right back, scoring on a four -yard run by Jeff Hams, and Shawn LaRue forced his way through to the goal line for the extra points. Then Long Creek seemingly built momentum and attempt ed to chip away at the runaway Cardinal lead with a daring 31 yard run scoring a touchdown. "This game gave us a chance to look at all of our ballplayers. Long Creek just doesn't have enough people to have a really good ballclub. We played well, and I think everybody had fun. We tried a lot of new things you can't try in a tight ballgame," said lone Coach Gordon Meyers.
