The only scoring in the contest came in the early moments of the second quar ter, on a quarterback sneak by Mustang helmsman John Bier from one yard out. Doug Holland kicked the conversion point, making it 7-0. The score remained static for the re mainder of the game, but not without a few close calls. Pilot Rock drove to Hep pner's one yard line in the closing minutes of the first half, and was within the Mustang ten on one other ocassion. "We moved the ball pretty well throughout the game," commented Heppner Head Coach John Sporseen, "but a couple of our drives got stopped by penalties. . . We had offsides called against us something like four plays in a row during one series." Heppner's attack was al most entirely on the ground, with Bier attempting only three passes one of them complete to Brian Marlin for a 12-yard gain. The Mustangs logged a total of 231 yards in rushing, compared with 146 for the Rockets. Heppner running backs had sticky fingers during the Pilot Rock contest, not once fumbling the pigskin in their 51 rushing plays. The Mustang defense show ed its spine during the Rockets' two close calls near the Heppner goal line. Hep pner defenders held Pilot Rock , to .146 yards on thei ground and 36 in the air. Defensemen forced and reco vered a fumble, and Brian Marlin and Lionel Wood each picked off Rocket passes Marlin running his intercep tion back for 11 yards'. Coach Sporseen singled out Marlin, Parker, Dale Holland and Jody Marlatt for praise for thejr defensive efforts during the game. Come-from-behind thriller gives Cards 24-20 win over Touchet Adrenalin was flowing in lone Friday evening, when the hometown Cardnials pulled off a stunning 24-20 come-from-behind win over Touchet of Washington in the closing minutes of their season open er Touchet overpowered lone during the first half of the game, enjoying a 20-0 lead over the Cardinals going into the end of the third quarter. The larger Washington team scored on an explosive 85-yard run by 190-pound senior Mike Stanley, and a pair of 20-yard passes. The Indians muffed two conversion attempts. But the pattern changed in the closing minutes of the third period when Greg Riet mann scrambled five yards to paydirt, with quarterback Dennis Stefani picking up the conversion points on a pass to Robin La Rue. Ione's defense stiffened dur ing the fourth quarter. Then diaster appeared to strike. As lone regained control of the ball and began a drive to the Touchet goal, an Indian de fender intercepted a Stefani pass. Luckily, holding was called on Touchet during the play, giving the Cards a 15-yard bonus. lone capital ized on the next play, as Kevin McCabe ran 12 yards for the second Cardinal TD. A Stefani to Dan McElligott pass added two more to the scoreboard, leaving lone with a deficit of only four points. With 3:34 remaining on the clock, Stefani stepped back to pass. Unable to find a recei ver, he broke through a gap in the Touchet line, sprinting 40 yards to the goal line. The lone quarterback ran in the conver sion points, creating a four point Touchet deficit. The Cardinals prevented Touchet from sustaining a drive, then took over control of the ball, and allowed the remaining seconds of the game to tick away. lone defenders held Touchet to77 yards and no points during the final quarter, although during the earlier part of the game, they had diificulity controlling the pas sing game of Indian quarter back Rocky Pisca, who con nected for 263 yards in the air. The eight Cardinal defense men took down their oppon ents nine more times, with half of the Card defenders logging more than 10 tackles. "That's team defense," said lone coach Gordon Meyers, noting that it took "a great effort by everybody" to shake off first-game jitters and capture a come-from-behind win.
