With several beautiful glads from his gar den, Dr. Wolff explained the growth habits and needs of growing glads and the points to look for when selecting gladiolus for exhibition. In his garden, Dr. Wolff has 60 different varieties and he sets out about 1,000 gladiolus corms beginning in mid-April with successive plantings every two weeks thru May. The corms are planted 4-6 inches deep in fertile loam in a location which received full sun. A regular water and fertilizer schedule must , be maintained. The quality of the bloom produced is already determined by the time two leaves appear and any devia tion from the schedule will show itself in the size and placement of the blooms on the stalk. Gladiolus corms are sold in 4 sizes, small, medium, large, and jumbo although this size is not indicative of the size of the bloom produced. The varieties are classified in five sizes from the small 100 up the the very large 500. The 200 and 300 sizes have been developed to a finer degree and have many facets in their characteristics and is a good reference for the gardener interested in pur chasing proven glads. In selecting glads for show at county fair or flower exhibits, the gardener should know that each variety must meet the measurements for its' specific size. The 100 cannot have a basal floret larger than 2Mb inches in diameter or smaller than 1V4 inches. Delta Huber and Judy Osmin served refreshments to the members and guests BiinnniiiniinnnniiiniiiririiuimiiiniiiiiirfniiitiHiiimiMtiimiiriiimniMiitiiiniiiiiwiiiiM during a short business meet-, ing. Plans for constructing a community booth and enter ing arrangements and speci mens in the county fair were discussed as well as the September meeting which will be a mini-flower show held at the lone United Church of Christ Social room. The public is invited to participate in the flower show on September 13. Mrs. Harold Huber and Mrs. Lee Pettyjohn are co-chairpersons and may be contacted for more information about the flower show. Health district ground work Petitions are being circulated this week that would put , formation of a county-wide health care district on the November general election ballot. Sweeney named campaign Chairman for Bennett Chuck Bennett, Democratic candidate for Dist. 55 repre sentative, announced this week that Heppner Attorney Mike Sweeney will head his campaign in Morrow County. A resident of Gates, Bennett defeated Rep. Jack Sumner of Heppner in the May primary and will face Republican Bill Bellamy in the November general election. Sweeney said Bennett had scheduling conflicts that kept him from attending the fair and rodeo, but noted that the candidate will return to Mor row County in early Septem ber for a 10-day stay during which time Bennett will cam paign door-to-door. "Chuck is a knowledgeable and concerned candidate who prefers to talk to people one-on-one to get their ideas and express his," said Sween ey. Sweeney said public speak ing engagements will also be arranged during Bennett's stay in Morrow County. Ballot measure's effect on BMCC unknown, president tells board "The impact of Ballot Mea sure 6 on Blue Mountain Community College cannot be determined at this time," President Ron Daniels told the board in a report at the regular August meeting. Dan iels said, "Even with release of the 138 page report pre pared by Attorney General Jim Reddin, there are still many unanswered questions." "If I were to release preliminary figures now, there is a strong possibility that as additional questions are answered, those figures would change. The release of conflicting estimates would only add to the confusion surrounding the measure and could damage credibility of the college," Daniels said. Plans for improving regis tration procedures were de scribed to the board in a report presented by Dean of Students, Pat Loughary. Fall term registration will be conducted in the MAC Center with all registration stations housed in that building. This physical arrangement will allow students to complete all registration steps in one area. In prior years registration stations have been established in several buildings, thus complicating the process for the students. It is anticipated that the new procedure which will be used on a trial basis Fall Term will require less student time for registration. According to Dean Lough ary, the college is also planning to mail complete Fall Term Class Schedules to all box holders in the college district and to hold an evening registration on Thursday, Sep tember 21. The bulk mailing of class schedules is a first time effort by the college and is intended to increase public awareness of the programs and classes available at the college. The evening registration is also a first time effort and has been established to assist those students who would be re quired to miss work if registration times were avail able only in the daytime. In other business, the board: Accepted a bid from Sherwood & Roberts for all college liability insurance. The total insurance premium for 1978-79 will be $1,557, compared to $9,943 for the 1977-78 year. Hired Susan Lloyd, photo graphy instructor; Larry Par menter, civil engineering in structor; and Janet Groat, Public Information Coordina tor. Instructed President Dan iels to contact Wally Wedin and Anna Lee Kennedy to see if they would agree to accept another three-year term on the college budget committee. 1 I I 1 !
