B-FOUR The Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon, Thursday, August 17, 1978 This yeaF9 fail boast many firsts in 4-BT Cluib presentations ByBirdineTullis Not only have dates of Morrow County Fair been changed, but a number of 4-H events and activities have been scheduled in a different manner, to allow the public a better look at a wider number of youth events. Be sure to check your schedule in the front of the premium book, or you may miss that special event you planned to view. For the first time in many years, 4-H clothing, knitting, creative arts, foods, and all such exhibits will remain for the duration of the fair. Previously, the exhibits were taken to state fair for judging while our fair was still in progress. Be sure to take time to browse through the 4-H Annex for the exhibits proudly dis played there are the work of 4-H'ers from all of Morrow County. New this year are geology exhibits, along with a wider display of garden and flower projects. The Tole painting exhibits are truly works of art, and most of them will probably be traveling on to state fair, if they follow their usual pattern. This year a new 4-H tole club from north Morrow will be adding their talents to the outstanding exhibits from south Morrow. Food preparation contests and presentations have been scheduled for both Monday and Tuesday, with food prep aration taking the morning hours, and presentations the afternoons. Bread baking, Long preparation goes into fair displays before opening day Good displays of Morrow County livestock, produce, baked guutis and handicrafts do no just happen. They involve weeks of preparation by the Fair's department heads. A number of Morrow Coun tians have been responsible for fair departments for more than 23 years, donating their time and energy to produce a better show each year. Head superintendents of the various departments include Bill Rawlins in grain and hay; Joe Bartlett in commercial dinners, cookie bakin, salads and sandwiches, are just a few of the contest, with 4-H'ers preparing all these goodies right before your eyes! You'll be amazed at the skills of the young cooks, grades 4-12. The public is invited to the 4-H Annex at any time to view the activities. Don't be con cerned if you walk right in and find a food contest underway, or a presentation. They are for you to enjoy, as well as a learning experience for the member. There are usually chairs available for you to pull up and be comfortable while you enjoy the activity. Meanwhile, out in the barns there is action a-plenty under way. Saturday afternoon will find both 4-H and FFA members involved in livestock judging contests. That's when the kids have the opportunity to test their judgement on rating the animals, against that of the judge. Monday you'll find the kids showing their animals, each hoping that theirs will be the near perfect one that rates the purple ribbon. Tuesday is showmanship, and once again the kids enter the ring with their animals. It is the member that is being judged this time, not the animal. But the time and effort spent in training, as well as the skills of the member are what pays off in this contest! There are many events and activities that are unnoticed by the casual observer, herd- potatoes; Betty Christman in frutis and vegetables, Ken Miller in flowers; Gary Grieb in livestock; Irene Anhorn in poultry and small animals; Marilyn Bergstrom in cloth ing; Ruth Bergstrom in nee dlework; Bebe Munkers in canning; Helen Currin and Sue Vinsonin in foods; Kay Walsingham in art and photo graphy; Marlene Gray in crafts; Harold and Edna Peck in Collectors' Corner; Anne Schwarz in Kids' Corner, and DeAnna McCabe in Teen Corner. manship being one.
