EIGHT The Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon, Thursday, July 27, 197H Marty Smith suits up for final game of H.S. career Next week, Marty Smith will take two weeks leave from his duties at Kinzua Corporation's Heppner mill, and trade in his jeans and work gloves for a helmet and shoulder pads. Instead of stacking up lumber, he will be attempting to stack up opposing linemen during the annual Shriners East-West football classic to be played this year in Baker. Marty was one of a handful of high school football stand outs from across the state to be selected to play in the all-star football game. And the six-foot, five-inch, 250 pound, and still growing Heppner gridder is looking forward to the contest. Scouts from regional col leges are expected to be on hand in droves to look for new talent from among the recent high school graduates taking part in the showdown. Marty does not especially want his football career to end with high school. "I hope I get to play a lot in the East-West game," he said. But Marty is no stranger to college scouts. He's already been offered partial scholar ships to play ball at Ricks College in Idaho and Columbia Basin Community College in Pasco. Representatives of Pacific University and Oregon Tech have been in toch with aim, and the University of Oregon invited Smith and his family to Eugene to take in a game and talk football. Eugene to take in a game and talk football. "My parents have been pretty much letting me make my own decision," said Mar ty. "They'll give me advice, but not tell me what to do." "I'd like to play college ball," he said. "But I'm thinking about delaying enter ing for a year to make some more money before starting." Smith was a three-year letterman in football at Hepp ner High, where he played offensive and defensive tackle and noseguard. His job at Kinzua keeps him in good physical shape, he says, although he has been doing some running to keep up his wind for the East-West game. The East squad will begin practice on July 31 at Eastern Oregon State College in La Grande to prepare for the Aug. 12 contest in Baker. Despite the pressures that will come with the presence of college scouts at the game, Smith said he is "going mainly to have a good time. I'm not nervous don't have any but terflies. But maybe I will on the morning of the game." Proceeds from the East West classic will go towards financing Shrine programs for crippled children. Persons wishing to take in the game may obtain tickets from Dr. L.D. Tibbies in Heppner, preferably before the end of the month.
