Birdine T 111 ' ' ..His r j 1 i j Area grazing land to benefit from House vote Teen Mat! ieeiiet lor Mate Fair A recent communication from the State 4-H Office indicates there is still a need for about 45 senior 4-H members to serve on Teen Stall during State Fair. A number of junior superinten dent positions are still open, as well as general work in the 4-H department. Positions will be filled as applications are received. Older members in terested should contact Bir dine or John to determine dates and positions open to teen staff. Cathy Palmer selected to serve as LAKO Camp Coun selor Cathy Palmer, Heppner, has been selected to serve as one of nine-counselors who will greet the Labo exchange students when they arrive in Oregon this summer. First stop for the Japanese exchan gees will be a camping experience at the Oregon 4-H Center near Salem, where the nine counselors , will assist with programs before the students depart for homes with host families throughout Oregon. To Work at State Fair Julie Grieb, Lexington, will be working with one of her favorite projects while serv ing as Junior Superintendent lor Beef at Oregon State Fair, August 31 through September :;. Janet McElligott, lone, will be assigned duties for the same period when she reports to the 4-H Building. at State Fair on the same dates. We congratulate both older 4-H'ers for sharing their skills by assisting with 4-H events at State Fair. , A Different 4-H Opportunity Would your family like to be involved in a different sort of 4-11 project helping With a project for the blind? Due to the increased demand for Guide Dogs, the breeding . program for Guide Dogs has been stepped up, and is experiencing an acute short age of 4-H homes for the pups. The program- antici pates about 246 pups to be placed in the next 90 days. Guide Dogs are raised in the home, and later taken to training centers to be trained to serve the blind. Range Camper Needed Last call for applicants to attend the Oregon Youth Range Camp August 6-12 at the Jackman Youth and Natu ral Resources Center, Logan Valley in Grant County. All boys and girls who have completed the 9th grade are eligible to apply. Scholarships are available to cover camp fees so the camper has no cost except transportation to and from camp. For more information call John Nordheim. Cook Books Coming Two Morrow County Cook Books will be coming off the press soon, so there should be lots of new goodies in the making! Beta Omega of lone have recently started plans for a cook book, in which they hope to include main dish favorites, desserts, salads or any other favorite recipes of Morrow County cooks. Boxes have been placed in various busi nesses, as well as the County Office in Irrigon, to collect your recipes before the dead line date of Aug. 23. Their cookbook will be a limited edition." Both cookbooks should be collector's items with recipes from all areas of our county- Oregon Congressman Al Uii man said today that a mea sure approved by the House last week will lead to substan tial improvements in the productivity of grazing lands in Eastern Oregon. "In addition, all users of benefit significantly in the long run," said UHman, who is a cosponsor of the Public' Grazing Lands Improvement Act. The bill now goes to the Senate. The legislation overhauls the grazing f formula and updates range management programs on public lands, Ullman said. ; An important provision of the bill expands the Bureau of Land Management's program to control excess wild horses and burros on the range. BLM is required under the legisla: tion to remove excess wild horses and burros. The proce dure for allowing adoption of the animals is streamlined by the measure. A grazing fee formula is established by the bill that, for the first time, reflects live stock production costs, beef prices and rancher's ability to pay.
