"He got within ."out tour feet of me before I tamed away." Hang gliders 1-ke lo look for hawks and eagles, Peterson explained, saice both th1 birds and their human counterparts seek the same air currents for cruis ing. Peterson remembers Hy ing from his most frequented site at McNab during the . opening days of deer season. ' Hunters had pulled off the road all over the place to watch." The Ionian admits to appreciating an audience, but noted "I'm glad it wasn't bird season." Since he was the first in the area to take up hang gliding, many curious local residents tiiok time to watch him perform over his most fre quent haunt, the Dick Sherer ranch near, McNab. "Nobody gave me a bad time, or told me I was crazy," he said. "They were just interested. They wanted to know what it felt like." "My folks were a little leery of this at first," he admitted, "but they're really behind me and my hang gliding now." Peterson carries his folded ji,A n glider on a rack above his four-wheel drive rig. When he reaches the top of a hill, he s-.sembles the synthetic cloth and aircraft metal framed kite, a process that takes less the five minules. Then he dons a harness rig to fasten himself about," said manager Jim Swanson. "The first year in the legue, we were 3-13, then the next year 8-8. This year we were 11-5. We've shown that we're contenders." Despite the loss of live players including Cole and Bier from the Morrow Coun ty roster next year, Swanson predicted returning veteran starters and incoming Little League talent will give the local team another shot at the league pennant. "Next year, we'll be hot," he said. Swanson was named' to manage the league's first team Hermiston League Na tional All btar squad, which will include lour Morrow County standouts--Bier, Hol land, Cole and John Murray. Practice was set to begin this week, with tournament action slated to begin in Lewiston,. Idaho on July 8.
