B ier fires no tier: hi IMF ShT!fT!f4rhTX Morrow County's Babe Ruth baseball team moved up to the 2-4 mark last Monday, when John Bier threw a no hitter to shoot down the Hermiston Herald team 16-3. It was Morrow County's game from the outset, with Bier striking out the first three batters faced. When the first Morrow County batter of the game, Doug Holland, stepped to the plate, he slugged out a home run his second of the sea son. "Holland's homer must have gone 360 feet," said manager Jim Swanson, "It was just about a perfect game for us Bier really had the ball moving... A pop fly was the only thing they got out of the infield." The Hermiston' Herald squad scored on two Morrow County errors the only er rors made during the game. Holland was 2 for 2 at the plate, with 3 RBIs. Rick Cole was 2 for 4. Twelve Morrow County hits were tallied in all, compared with none for the Herald. Swanson said Bier's no-hitter effort consisted mainly of a combination of fastballs and sliders. The game was called after five innings, when the 10-run rule was invoked. During Babe Ruth action last week, Morrow County lost a home game at lone 10-8 toTum-A-Lum of Hermiston. The Thursday night game was called due to darkness in the sixth, as Morrow County was in the process of catching up to the Hermiston team, which had led by as much as 8 runs. Morrow County would have had two more chances at the plate, had the game not been called. Rising up from an 8-0 deficit in the third, Morrow County came to within one run of the Hermiston team at one point in the later innings. Morrow County outhit the Hermiston squad 9-8, but gave up 6 errors. Steagall finishing first, Cindy Dougherty second, and Jan ice Healy third. Tony and Ron Currin placed third in team roping, and Lawrence Rice earned ninth place points in the bareback bucking contest. Cindy Dougherty was se cond in the pole race, with Janice Healy placing ninth in goat tying. track. Eighth-grade girls receiving letters as basket ball team members included Diann Morter, Michelle La Rue, Anita Palmer, Mary Kincaid, Tammy Holtz, Mar garet Doherty, Elizabeth McEUigott and Corby Sulli van. Morter, Palmer and Kincaid also played on the co-ed baseball team. Craig Gutierrez, Steve Millman, Craig, Hams, How ard Leavitt, Denny Starr and Mustang distance man Dan Nix took first place in the 3,000 meter run, with a time of 9:36.2. He also placed second in the 1,500, crossing the finish line in 4:32.5. State A girls' champion high jumper Maureen Healy cleared the bar at 5 feet 5 inches to win first place at the Pendleton meet, then went on to place second in both the long jump and 200 Printing On Wednesday, Morrow County played Sports Village of Hermiston, whalloping them 17-7. Bier pitched a two-hitter in that game, with a no-hitter in progress until the final inning.- Morrow County got 10 runs on 8 hits in thp first inning, with Gregg Rietmann going 4-4 at the plate, batting in 4 RBIs during the game. All totaled Morrow County bat ters slugged out 14 hits, with fielders tallying only two errors. On Tuesday, a slugfest at Stanfield netted Morrow County batters 25 runs off of 17 hits. Rick Cole pitched, allowing only six hits to Stanfield. The entire Morrow County roster got a chance to play in the game, with many of the scoring hits. Doug Holland homered in that contest, with Jeff Hamms batting 3 for 4, and Rick Cole going 4 for 6. Morrow County burst out for 14 runs in the 6th. They gave up five errors. Next week marks the midseason point for this season's Babe Ruth play. In boys' cow cutting, Tony Currin finished second, fol lowed in third place by his brother Ron. In the girls' division, Janice Healy placed second, followed in fourth place by her sister Maureen. Jack Yocom tied for sec ond and third place in the saddle bronc event, followed by Lawrence Rice in fourth. Larry Sullivan won certifi cates for their efforts on the football, basketball and base ball squads, with Tim Pat ton, Vince McEUigott, Jim Jepson and Darrin Padberg earning the recognition in football and basketball. Scott Barnett combined football and baseball, while Roger Childers and Troy Lindstrom gained their certi ficates in basketball and baseball. Roger Morter was meter dash. Heppner's Richard Schmidt won the boys' long jump contest, soaring 20 feet 9V4 inches, then took first in the triple jump with a 42 foot effort. The Mustang field man turned in his best high jumping effort of the season, leaping 6 feet 5'2 inches, matching the school record. But Schmidt's effort only earned him second place at the Pendleton meet. Freshman Susan Johnson hardly looked like an under classman at the meet, taking second place honors in both the shot put and 200 meter hurdles. Teammate Kelly Ham mond placed second in the javelin, with'a 93 foot 10 inch effort. "I was pleased to see that the kids were competitive to triple-A teams like Pendleton and Hermiston," said Mus tang track coach Dale Conk lin, "especially after almost a two week layoff." ft ' - - '-V. In the barrel race, Hepp ner's Janice Healy placed first in 17.37 seconds, a scant .12 seconds better than third place winner Jana Steagall. Heppner scored 114'6 team points, well ahead of second place Crane at 68. recognized for basketball involvement and Don Taylor for baseball. A certificate for being a member of both the baseball and girls' basketball team went to Anne Murray, with Patti Taylor earning one in baseball and Sharon Kroll and Bunny Salchenberg in basketball. Ms. Salchenberg was also the recipient of the Most Improved Player Award. Local youths win points in Prineville Jr. Rodeo Three Morrow Countians took first place honors during last week's Tri-County Jun ior Rodeo held in Prineville. Cindy Dougherty was first in the senior breakaway division, followed by Jana Steagall in second place. Si Lawrence was first in the senior saddle bronc contest, and Brett Sherer took first in the junior poles. Third and fourth places in the junior poles went to Trisha Mahoney and Tara Mahoney, with Trisha also taking second in the junior division barrel race. Lee Rice placed second in junior calf riding competition, fol lowed in fourth place by Cliff Dougherty. Cindy Dougherty also claimed second place honors in the senior pole bending contest. The Heppner GAZETTE-TIMES Morrow County Educator's held their annual invitational tournament June 3 at Willow Creek Country Club. Larry Bartee and Mike Wetherell tied for the low gross honors, followed by Al Beck. John Edmundson and Gorden Fjeld tied for third low gross. In the low net competition Gary Turner, Gary Nelson and Terry Gibbs tied for the first honors. Second low net Cardinal varsity awards received lone High School athletes were recently honored at their Spring Sports Dessert, where awards, letters and pins were presented to parti cipants in baseball, tennis and track. Grace McEUigott was the winner of the Senior Athlete award for her contributions to the volleyball, track and basketball teams during her high school career. Brenda Patton was presen ted with the Most Improved award by girls' track coach Barbara Stefani. Letters for both baseball and track were given to Robin LaRue, Jerry Riet mann, Larry Snider, Bruce Millman, Les Thompson, Gregg Rietmann, Shawn La Rue and Treve Peterson. Tennis letters went to Danny McEUigott, Dennis Stefani, Rick Gilbert, Stuart Keene and Clint Carlson, with Jerry McEUigott, Mike Leavitt and Duane Fetsch winning junior varsity pins. The unbeaten Dodgers were upset by the third-ranking Giants club 7-3 during Monday's game. They had come into the game with a 10-0 record. Dodgers still remain com fortably at the top of Little League standings with a 10-1 record, as of Monday night, ahead of the second-place Rawlins playing in national golf tourney Heppner collegiate golfer Charles Rawlins is playing this week in the National Junior College Golf Tourna ment in Nashville, Tenn. Rawlins, third-ranking Oregon junior college golf medalist, is representing Central Oregon Community College at the Nashville tourney. He left for Tennes see last weekend, with eight other Oregon junior college golfers who qualified for the Tee Cup Thompson won on the se venth hole. In the long drive contest, Larry Bartee won for the men and Edie Skow won for the women.
