II I'M I I - I Y - v if ; v If Kathy Wolff was recently selected as one of only two represented from Oregon to attend the National Youth Science Camp at Bartow, W. Va., this summer. Heading for deechers cd cm A I i rrime JruJD $6.50 Ileppiier High senior Kathy Wolff has been selected to represent Oregon at the Na tional Youth Science Camp at Bartow, W. Va., from June 30 to July 24. Only two students from each of the 50 states are selected to attend the camp. Participants are chosen on the basis of superior academic profici ency in science or mathema tics. Leadership abilities and involvement with extracurri cular activities are also taken into consideration. Judging was performed by the Oregon Department of Education. The state's other representative in the national program will by Amy Cruik shank of Bend. Miss Wolff will leave Port land on June 29, Upon arrival at Charleston, W. Va., she and representatives from the oth er states will meet with West Virginia Governor John D. Rockefeller IV, and tour the state capitol. After arriving at the camp's headquarters in the high Appalachians at Bartow, near the Virginia-West Virginia border, Miss Wolff and fellow science campers will attend some 30 lectures on subjects ranging from microbiology to wildlife management. Also included in the pro gram will be field trips to regional points of interests, such as the nearby National Radio Astronomy facility at Green Bank, W. Va., and a tour of Washington, D.C. Miss Wolff is the daughter of Dr. Wallace H. Wolff of Heppner. Every Wed. Winners from preliminary competition in the county's elementary and secondary schools were : Division I (grades 4,5 and 6) A.C. Winners from the prelimi nary competition will take part in a May 18 contest at 7:30 p.m. in lone. The contest is open to the public. The top speller in each division will qualify for a state contest, to be held in Salem during the Oregon State Fair on Sept. 2. Last year, two lone students placed third and fifth in their respective divisions during the statewide competition.
