status as landowners, farm
ers, slaveowners and pillars of
their local community.
Chang and Eng could swim,
perform gymnastic feats and
lead "normal" lives. Together
they built their own homes,
opened a store, became
wealthy gentlemen farmers,
skilled horsebreakers and,
when necessary, defended
themselves with their fists.
As the men grew older, each
dreamed of a separate life,
despite the obvious risks that
an operation would entail, and
each feared that the death of
one would cause his death, too.
Their natures were not
altogether harmonious, for
each was a highly individual
person Eng, quiet, contem
plative and even-tempered;
Chang, hot tempered, quarrel
some and, as he grew older,
inclined to bouts of heavy
drinking.
After their double marriage
they held to a rigid schedule of
spending three days at each of
their homes until exactly the
death both feared took place
within one hour when they
were 63 years old.
The Wallaces have presen

showmen and promoters, and
met many of the famous
people of their time in their
travels about this country and
Europe.
