lone Jr. High boys take
Arlington track crown
With nine first placings and
274 total points, Ione's Jr.
High track team grabbed the
boys championship of the
Arlington Jr. High Invita
tional Friday at Arlington.
The closest team to lone was
Wamic with 207 points, fol
lowed by Arlington, Dufur and
Fossil, all with 189, Maupin
and A.C. Houghton with 125
and Wasco with 58.
Don Taylor, Howard Leavitt
and John Murray were all
double winners for the Cards.
Taylor's wins came in the
intermediate 100 meter low

The lone Jr. High girls team
also scored well at Arlington,
as Margaret Doherty won the
100 yard dash and the 440 relay
team of Mary Kincaid, Anne
Murray, Kris Pettyjohn and
Doherty also placed first.
Adding to the point total was
Michelle LaRue's second in
both the high jump and
hurdles and third in the shot,
Kincaid's second in the high
jump, Doherty's second place
long jump and Murray's third
in the long jump and fifth in
Mustangs stop
Blue Devils, 6-4
Heppner jumped into the
thick of the conference pen
nant race Tuesday by handing
Condon its first loss in league
play, 6-4 at Condon.
The Mustangs had to over
come a pair of two-run homers
slugged by the Blue Devils but
coach Dale Holland said his
team won the game with a
good job of running the bases
and good pitching.
Randy Worden quieted Con
don for five innings, except for
the gophers in the first and
fourth. In the sixth, he turned
the ball over to Deniis Peck
with one out and the bases full.

gain 1st
place tie
Heppner's Mustang golfers
teamed up for a 417 combined
score Thursday at The Dalles
Country Club to gain a first
place tie in three-way link
competition.
The Mustangs team total
matched that of AAA Wash
ington High School of Portland
and was one stroke ahead of
Wahtonka's 418 total.
. Mike Lott led the way with a
93 followed by Jeff Edmund
son at 94, Jerry Cutsforth at 98
and Brian Thompson at 128.

In the Pilot Rock Relays
April 20, the Cards teamed up
for first place finishes in both
the girls high jump with Mary
Kincaid, Margaret Doherty
and Michelle LaRue, and the
boys 440 relay with John
Murray, Jeff Hams, Don
Taylor and Howard Leavitt.
Peck earned the save by
whiffing one batter and forc
ing another to end the inning
on a ground out.
Heppner got on the board in
the first on a single by Peck, a
walk and an error. Two more
runs were added in the second
on a pair of walks, two
sacrifices and Bryan Marlin's
single. In the fifth, one run
was scored as Peck and Mike
Stookey both connected for
hits and the Mustangs ended
the scoring in the sixth when
Marlin and Jim Kenny singled
and were knocked home by
Peck's double.
The Heppner win leaves
Condon narrowly on top with a
3-1 mark, followed by the
Mustangs and Sherman at 2-1,
Wasco at 1-2 and lone at 0-3.

8 to take part in
Special Olympics
Eight youngsters in' the Heppner Elementary Special
Education Class will travel to LaGrande for participation in
their second Special Olympics Thursday, May 18.
The classmates, taught by Sue Dicker, plan to compete in
a total of seven different events at the Regional Special
Olympics Track Meet to be held at Easter Oregon State
College.
Divided according to age groups, all the Heppner
participants will take part in the 50-yard dash and the softball
throw events.
Tina Carey will also enter the sack race, while Kevin Chick
and David Burkenbine plan to add both the sack and 3-legged
races to their schedule. Marcie Stookey, Jerry Anderson,
Mike Case, Linda Galbraith and Doug Raaf will compete in
the standing long jump event with Jerry, Mike and Linda
adding the 330 yard dash.

"We were looking good for
three innings until the bottom
fell out," said Card coach Del
LaRue.
McCabe, who pitched five
innings plus before being
relieved by Les Thompson,
and Robin LaRue both came
close to hitting for the cycle
when they tripled in the sixth.
McCabe ended with a homer,
triple and double while LaRue
went four-for-four with a
homer, triple and two singles.

win, 2-1, Friday in Maupin.
Worden went all the way on
the mound, giving up a lone
run in the first on a walk,
sacrifice and an error. He
recorded six strikeouts and
four walks in his second
well-pitched complete game of
the season.
Heppner took the lead in the
fifth ining, scoring two runs on
singles by Mike Stookey,
Worden, Bryan Marlin and

Mustang coach Dale Hol
land said he was particularly
pleased with his team's defen
sive improvement in recent
games. Heppner was tagged
with one miscue against
Wasco and the team has
committed only three errors
in the last five games.
The win evened Heppner's
league mark at 1-1.

McEwen gained the win
after relieving starter John
Bier in the fourth inning.
The win was the first of the
year for the jayvees, who
earlier had dropped a double
header to Weston-McEwen by
14-2 and 17-0 margins and fell
to Riverside 12-3.
