SIX The Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon, Thursday, May 4, 1978 Cardinal thinclads take fifth at Arlington meet lone tracksters tuned up for this Saturday's Big Sky Con ference championships by placing sixth among 12 teams in the boys bracket of the Arlington Invitational track and field meet last weekend. Two of the top five schools were Big Sky opponents of the Cards while the remaining three came from outside the conference. Wasco County racked up 115 points for the team title, followed by Helix (75), Culver (54), Umatilla (50), Condon (48) and lone (42). The leading point-getter for the Cards was Terry Starr, who scored in all three of his specialties. Starr won the discus with a throw of 120'7'i", placed second in the shot with a put of 38'9 V and took fifth in the javelin at Robin LaRue, easily win ning the first heat of the 120 high hurdles, placed second overall in the event with a time of 17.2. Jerry Rietmann went 9' in the pole vault, which was good for third place. Gaining fifth place points for the Cards were Bruce Millman with a 32'5" effort in the shot and Larry Snider with a 11:19.7 clocking in the two-mile. Ione's 440 relay team of Treve Peterson, LaRue, Starr and Rietmann finished fourth in 50.1. The lady Cards scored in two events at Arlington as lone vaulter Jerry Riet mann eyes the bar as he takes off on a successful 9' effort. Rietmann placed third at Arlington Saturday. The Cards jifmped on top in the first inning, scoring four runs on as many hits. Don Taylor, Jeff Jams and John Murray got things going with singles, followed by walks to Craig Gutierrez and Anne Murray. Christ Rietmann cap ped the inning with a single which knocked in two runs. The lone lead withstood a three-run Blazer second inning but fell in the fourth when Oregon Trail crossed the plate four times. Trailing 7-4 going into the bottom of the fifth, lone put two runners on base and then John Murray tied the score with a three-run homer. Fol lowing the blast, Gutierrez singled, reached third on passed balls and scored the winning run on an errant pick-off throw. Ione's remaining hit was a double by John Murray. Gutierrez started on the mound for the Cards and was relieved in the third by John Murray. The two hurlers combined for eight Blazer whiffs, six by Murray. , "J 3 T 1 1 w HP 11 ' Ponies put away Honkers, finish season with 5-1 mark It took the Ponies seven innings to put away a stubborn Arlington squad Thursday but coach Al Beck's Heppner Jr. High baseballers pulled out a 7-5 road win to finish their season with a 5-1 slate. Heppner pounded Honker pitching for 10 hits, scoring a pair of runs in the first and third innings and a single tally in the fifth, before sending the game-winners home in the seventh. In the first frame, Rick Klaus laced a double and Doug Holland drew a walk. Both runners crossed the plate on a throwing error. Two more runs followed in the third when Don Lott and Holland singled and came home on errors. In the fifth, Holland doubled and later scored on Dorian Forrar's ground out. The deciding runs came in the seventh when Holland cracked his second double of the day and was sent home on Forrar's base hit. Forrar later scored on a wild pitch. Holland picked up the win for the Ponies after starting the game and throwing six innings plus before being relieved by Robert Bier. In Heppner's previous HHS rodeo team 1st Heppner High School's ro deo team got the season off to a running start by placing first among 24 teams at the 4th annual Sherman High Rodeo held Saturday in Rufus. Forty-two schools were represented at the rodeo, with 24 fielding enough entries for team competition. ELKS 350 MEMBERS AND OUT-OF-TOWN GUESTS ONLY j Mustang tracksters roll on Finding tougher competi tion in the elements than in either Sherman County or Riverside, Heppner's Mus tangs slogged through the wet and cold to a convincing victory in a three-way track meet last week at Sherman. The Mustangs dominated the meet by taking first in 12 of the 17 events and picked up one school record along the way. Final team scores showed Heppner on top with 105 points, Sherman in second with 59 and Riverside in third with 10. The school mark fell in the 300 meters intermediate hur dles where Sam Myers turned in a winning time of 43.2. Myers was among four double winners for the Mustangs as he also took the 110 high hurdles in 19.1. Other two-time winners included Dave Piper (2:15.2 in the 800 and 5'10" in the high jump), Dan Nix (4:39.9 in the 1,500 and a personal best of 9:59.1 in the 3,000) and Marty Smith 48'6" game, Pony pitchers allowed Condon only two hits but the Blue Devils walked their way to an 8-4 win. Condon scored all eight runs in the second inning on the strength of two hits and seven bases on balls. Pat Parker started on the mound for the Ponies and was Local Jr. Olympics set for May 13 Track competitors through age 15 are invited to enter the local Junior Olympics qualifying meet scheduled for Saturday, May 13 at the Heppner High School track. Competition will be divided into four age brackets In termediate (14 and 15 year olds), Junior 12 and 13), Midget (10-11) and a new division, Bantam, for nine and unders. Entries will be based on the competitors age as of Jan. 1. The local meet is being sponsored by the Heppner Lions and is one of 60 qualifying meets around the state. First and second place finishers, if they meet state qualifying standards, will go on to the state meet June 3 at Madison High School, Portland. From there.winners can advance to the Regional meet set for July 15 in Seatlle and finally the National Junior Olympics in Lincoln, Nebraska this August. Further information about the meet can be obtained from Heppner Jr. High track coaches Courtney Kiser and Lynda Murray. Pre-registration is not required. The meet will begin at 10 a.m. Glide with 51 and Pendleton with 50. Jana Steagall led the local cowpokes by finishing first in pole bending, second in break away roping and third in barrels to take girls all-around honors. Janice Healy picked up Heppner's other first, in barrels, and added a third in cow cutting. Ron Currin wrestled down a second in bulldogging, Mary in the shot and 124'6V in the discus). Jim Kenny won the 200 in 26.2, Dennis Peck won the javelin with a throw of 154'2" and both the 400 relay (Kenny, Myers, Peck and Bryan Mar lin) and the 1,500 relay (Marlin, Kenny, Piper and Myers) finished first with respective times of 48.7 and Holland, Healy win 3 as Fillies fall to Sherman Two triple winners weren't enough to push the Fillies past Sherman County last week as Heppner had to settle for a second place finish in three way track competition. The Huskies picked up 79 points to lead the field, relieved by Bier in the second. Three Pony runs came in the third when Klaus, Holland, Bier and Harry Groshens all singled. Klaus had the hot bat for the day, going two for two plus a walk. Holland also had two hits in the three trips to the plate. at Rufus Daly took third in goat tying, Cindy Dougherty was third in poles, Maureen Healy also placed third in break away roping and Jack Yocom was fourth in bull riding. Picking up third place points were Larry Palmer followed by Heppner with 62 and Riverside with 12. Diane Holland dominated the weight events, sweeping to wins in the discus, shot and javelin. Her 97' 10" javelin toss was the best in the meet, as was her 82'4'4" discus throw and 31'6V4" shot put. The Fillies other big winner was Maureen Healy, who went 5'2" in the high jump and ran to wins in the 200 meters (29.3) and 800 meters ( 2 : 42.7) as well as joining Kellie Hammond, Susan Johnson and Laurie Harrison for a win in the 400 relay with a time of 55.6. Bonnie Nix took fourth in the javelin (70'5"), Miller threw the discus 61'5" for fourth and Wendy Myers gained a fourth place point in the 200 hurdles with a 40.7 clocking.
