FOURTEEN The Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon, Thursday, May 4, 1978 Barb's Plant Seller opens May 5 by Justine Weatherford Heppner will have a new business opening" its doors on May 5 and 6. To be known as Barb's Plant Seller, this shop is located at 250 W. Baltimore in the cozy but spacious daylight basement of the Dan James family home. The shop's entrace is at the east or left side of the residence. Barbara James has been keeping busy for months arranging the mirrored sales room and accumulating a stock of plants, plant soil and fertilizer, arrangement ma terials, ribbons, silk flowers and other articles for plant and flower lovers. She has several sizable work rooms and storage areas surrounding the sales room. Green-thumbed Barb, who has been close to plants all her life, will offer a large selection of hanging and table-type potted plants and dish gardens for home enrichment or gift giving. Barb's mother Mary Stpwart Milton-Freewater. has been in the florist business for many years. Her sister Cheryl Scott, Seattle, is a professionally-recognized floral designer Barbara James arranges a hanging piggyback plant in preparation for the open house of her new shop on Friday and Saturday, May 5 and 6. Barb's Plant Seller, located in the James' basement at 250 W. Baltimore, opens its doors just in time for Mothers Day shopping. Barb is quite excited about the large variety of life-life silk flowers she will handle. These can be made into bouquets or table arrange ments or into corsages for special occasions. She has made up a few sample corsages and will make others on order. As Barb's Plant Seller is opening just one week before Mother's Day, the shop will feature blooming plants for giving on that occassion. In stock will be azaleas, chrysan themums, hydrangeas and other bloomers of assorted sizes and colors which can be enjoyed in homes and then planted outside in Mothers' yards. Everyone is invited to the new shop's opening days. Saturday, May 5, and Sunday, May 6. On these days the shop will be open from 9:30 a.m. until 8 p.m., and Barbara's mother will come to help her present refreshments and give door prizes to Grand Opening visitors. Morrow Rodeo Court debut set Saturday in Arlington Nine take awards in s job skills meet Nine Heppner High School students received awards dur ing competition at the Career Skills Contest held in Pendle ton last month. Heppner's results in the contest were not available until earlier this week. First place awards were won by Carla Thorpe and Pam Voltz in the record keeping division. Second place honors went to Krynn Robinson for job interviews. Third place awards were captured by Wendy Myers, Mark Piper and Cathy Palmer for photo composition and Maureen Healy and Dee Hedman in the accounting category. First place blue ribbons were awarded 10 per cent of the contestants. Second place red ribbons went to 20 per cent, and third place white ribbons went to 30 per cent. The remaining contestants were awarded certificates. Queen Donna Palmer and Princesses Laurie Childers and Kim Pettyjohn of the Morrow County Fair and Rodeo Court will make their first grand entry of the year at the Arlington Rodeo this Saturday, May 6. The Court, accompanied by this year's pennant bearers Tammy Holtz, Anita Palmer and Kris Pettyjohn, will also represent Morrow County in the Arlington parade at 10:30 a.m. The jack pot rodeo event gets underway at 1:30 p.m. The Spray Rodeo Saturday, May 27, is on the Court's agenda as their next official appearance. Mrs. Marion Palmer, of lone, hosted the Court and pennant bearers and their mothers at a special luncheon in their honor last Saturday. Queen Donna and pennant bearer Anita Palmer were accompanied by their mother Mrs. Lee Palmer; Princess Kim and pennant bearer Kris Pettyjohn attended with their grandmother Mrs. Paul Petty john Sr., and Princess Laurie Childers was accompanied by her mother Mrs. Cleo Chil ders. Pennant bearer Tammy Holtz attended the luncheon with both her mother and grandmother, Mrs. Harold Holtz and Mrs. Laura Holtz. The Court and pennant bearers rode out four miles from lone to the Marion Palmer ranch on horseback for the luncheon. Decorations and center piece were all green, the color the Court has chosen for their -outfits this year. Each girl received a small gift from Mrs. Palmer. Students seek talks on BMCC budget levy Students and staff members of Blue Mountain Community College are seeking meetings with Morrow County service clubs and civic organizations to discuss the proposed BMCC budget with area voters. "Visiting teams" of stu dents, accompanied by a faculty member or admini strator, hope to meet with Morrow County residents to demonstrate student interest regarding the passage of the college's tax levy proposal , included on the May 23 ballot. Organizations able to sche dule the student teams be tween May 10 and election day are urged to contact the BMCC counseling center at ' 276-1260 in Pendleton.
