Eckman cops city league crown
Four free throws in the final
minute and a half by Dave
McLaughlin iced a second
consecutive city league cham
pionship for Eckman as they
held off a second half surge by
HHS athletes
try Pentathlon
The Pentathlon was added
to the repertoire of three
Heppner athletes last Friday
and all three came away from
the competion at Blue Moun
tain Community College think
ing they would like to see more
of it.
Heppner track coach Dale
Donklin accompanied Jim
Parker, Dennis Peck and
Maureen Healy to the four
team meet in which each
competitor picked any five of
the 10 events of the Decathlon.
Parker and Healy both finish
ed second in their respective
divisions and Peck wound up
in sixth place.
The three Heppner track
sters were matched against
athletes from Pilot Rock,
Hermiston and Pendleton high
schools.
Parker, second in the boys
ninth and tenth grade bracket,
chose the discus, javelin, shot,
100 meters and 400 meters and
recorded strong early-season
efforts of 118 feet 10 inches in
the discus and 41 feet 9 inches
in the shot.
Healy, competing in the
girls 11th and 12th grade
division, was on her way to a
first place finish until she fell
in the hurdle event and had to
settle for second. She finished
first in three events, recording
a 64.8 in the 400 meters,
clearing the bar at five feet in
the high jump and setting a
new school record of 17 feet in
the long jump. Healy's fifth
event was the 100 meter dash
in which she also finished
among the leaders.
Peck, enroute to a sixth
place finish in the boys 11th
and 12th grade bracket, set a
junior class record in the
javelin with a throw of 156 feet
8 inches. He also long jumped
19 feet and competed in the 100
meters, high jump and 400
meters.
Combining their efforts in
the 11th and 12th grade co-ed
grouping Healy and Peck
nailed down a second place
finish.
Colt finals Saturday
Colt basketballers will wrap up their season Saturday
with a championship tournament beginning at 10 a.m. in the
Heppner High School gym.
The four-team league completed regular season play last
week with the Colts and Hawks tied for first place honors
with 4-2 records. The Lions hold down third place with a 3-3
mark and the Bears are sitting in the cellar with a 1-5 record.
The tournament will open up with the Colts facing the
Bears followed by the Hawks vs. the Lions in the second
game. At the conclusion of the championship game, awards
will be presented to the players and an all-star team will be
named.
Concessions will be available and a hot dog lunch will be

VanMarter to post a 62-57 win
Sunday.
The early stages of the
game shaped up as a rout with
undefeated Eckman jumping
out to a 26-12 lead by forcing
turnovers and capitalizing on
12 first half points from Jim
Lankford. In the final six
minutes of the half, Van
Marter began to close the gap
and trailed by nine, 33-24, at
intermission. '
Opening the second half,
LaVern VanMarter, who was
held without a field goal in the
opening half, hit four quick
buckets to chop Eckman 's
lead to a single point, 33-32.
With 12 minutes remaining,
another VanMarter field goal
put his team in the lead for the
first time. The lead continued
to change hands five times
before Eckman moved on top
for good with three minutes
remaining.
McLaughlin was the top
scorer for Eckman with 17
points, with seven of those
coming from the line in the
second half. Lankford finished
with 16, Keith Curnutt added
nine and Rob Eckman finished
with seven.
VanMarter led all scorers
with 22 while Daryl Spivey
collected 10 and Frank Pear
son picked up nine points.
Cards lack experience
Baseball has returned to
lone after a years absence and
the comeback is none too soon.
With only six practice sessions
to prepare his team for their
season opener Tuesday
against Riverside, Coach Del
LaRue's task is not made any
easier by the fact that only one
member of the 15-man roster
has any varsity experience.

Kevin McCabe is the lone
returnee from the 1976 Card
team and LaRue figures the
junior will be seeing plenty of
action on the mound, behind
the plate and in the infield.
After Monday's first day of
practice, LaRue said he was
beginning to get an idea of
where most of the players
would end up for the year but
no positions were definitely
nailed down.
Possible mound staffers to
go along with McCabe include
sophomore Gari Gaustad and
freshman Les Thompson
while freshman Greg Riet
mann might be handling the
catching chores with McCabe.
Sophomores Robin LaRue
and Jerry Rietmann and
freshmen Shawn LaRue and
Treve Peterson are showing a
preference for some infield
work
Brian Rietmann is the only
senior on the squad and he is
joined by Junior John Lind
strom, sophomores Glenn
Krebs, Bruce Millman, Frank
Engelman and Larry Snider,
and freshman Barney Rea.,, j
