Free throws help Playing at home Saturday, the Cards made up for a previous week's defeat at the hands of Wheeler by coming back to clip the Falcons 60-58. The lead changed hands several times in the game which was tied after three periods. In the final minutes, Dennis Stefani hit two free throws and banked home a lay-in for a four point lone edge. Kevin McCabe iced the win by grabbing a missed Wheeler foul shot with seven seconds remaining. This time, unlike the pre vious meeting, it was lone cashing in its chips at the free Hunting seasons openings set by game commission Opening dates for the major 1978 hunting seasons were approved last week in Port land by the Fish and Wildlife Commission with several of the dates showing changes from the 1977 seasons. General deer season will open on both sides of the Cascades September 30. Rocky Mountain elk season will open November 4 and Roosevelt elk season on No vember 11. Antelope season will open one week earlier than it did last year on August 9 and deer and elk bowhunt ing will begin on August 26. ' The opening date for phea sants was set for October i4 biit the Commission decided not to set an opening date for chukars until later in the year. In the first game, the Falcons hit 28 of 34 shots from the line to beat the Cards, but Saturday, lone collected 12 points on .18 attempts for a 67 per cent effort. Wheeler actually hit one more field goal than the Cards but they lost their edge by calming to a more normal eight of 19 at the line. In other areas, the game was as close as the score indicated. Both teams pulled 34 rebounds, lone had 11 turnovers to Wheeler's nine and the Cards were tagged too early this year. The November 4 opening for Rocky Mountain elk is a week later than last year. The Commission adopted the later date because it will be looking at a number of alternatives again this year to reduce or spread out hunting pressure for elk, particularly on open ing weekend. The later open ing would leave room for special hunts prior to the general season if the Commis sion decides they are needed. Kevin McCabe hit his season high by nailing 10 of 16 shots and totaling 24 points to go along with his team high 11 rebounds. Dennis Stefani poured in 21 points while both Danny McElligott and Robin LaRue added 10. LaRue pulled 10 rebounds and Rick Gilbert grabbed nine while scoring eight points. Moving the ball well, the Cards picked up 19 assists in the game with McElligott dealing out seven. Umapine brought a 7-5 record into the game but after taking the early lead, they soon dropped off the pace, lone led by five at the quarter and 11 at half. "We got them down and forced them to take some bad shots," LaRue said. "Both teams were well matched as far as height but we just got things rolling." with 16 fouls to 15 for the Falcons. Stefani led the offensive show with a game high 25 points. McCabe added 10 point and as many rebounds and center Rick Gilbert turned in his second straight strong showing by hitting eight points and collecting seven boards. Robin LaRue had eight points and six rebounds while Danny McElligott added seven points. "We won one from the foul line for a change, " Card coach Del LaRue said. "Both teams played better than they did the week before." the state prior to setting big game season. The public will have an opportunity to com ment on any steps under consideration by the Commis sion and to present other suggestions. A schedule of meeting sites, times, and dates will be published later this spring. Length of seasons, bag limits and other hunting season regulations will be adopted following a public hearing on May 27 in Portland. Oregon Jr. High roundball tournament Feb. 11 lone will host a Junior High girls basketball tourney Saturday, Feb. 11, starting at 9 a.m. in the lone gym. Participating in the tournament along with the Cardinals will be Heppner, Riverside and Hermiston. Both 7th and 8th grade games will be featured. Ticket prices will be 25 cents for students and 50 cents for adults. JV Filly win streak hits five before loss Heppner's junior varsity Fillies extended their win streak to five games by downing both Sherman County and Pilot Rock before losing Friday to Weston-McEwen. In the fourth win of the streak, Heppner led from start to finish despite having three starters foul out and a fourth playing most of the final period with four fouls. The Fillies jumped to a 10-2 first quarter lead and maintained the edge on the way to a 27-22 win. Lyn Dee Devin was the leading Filly scorer with nine points. Box 705 Umtlll 922-4894 Heppner's Fillies started the week with a three point loss to Wasco County on the road Tuesday and then came home to record a 39-33 win over Weston-McEwen Friday. At Wasco, the Fillies hit only 22 per cent of their shots from the field and were able to convert only three of 16 foul shot attempts. Heppner held a 12-7 lead after the opening period but added only four points to their total in the second period while the Red sides racked up 16 points to take a 23-16 halftime lead. The Fillies rallied in the final period to close the gap but time ran out with Heppner on the short end of a 40-37 score. Maureen Healy racked up 14 points to lead the Filly scorers and she also collected nine rebounds and as many steals. Diane Holland scored seven points and grabbed a team high 12 rebounds while Jackie Mollahan totaled five points and nine boards. Wendy Myers had five points and five rebounds in the game. Returning home Friday, the Fillies used a third quarter full court press to overcome a Weston-McEwen lead and post the victory. Heppner had led throughout day, the Fillies played what coach Les Payne called their best game of the year as they came back strong in the fourth quarter to nip the Rockets 38-36. Devin again led the way with 11 points while Bonnie Arlington had nine and Ham mond and Alice Abrams both scored eight. Payne cited Hammond's effective passing as a key to the win. The streak came to an end the following night as Weston McEwen led from start to finish for a 19-14 win over the Fillies. Connor and Paula Palmer both scored four points for Heppner. "I think it was a case of just being worn out from the game the night before," Payne said. V s v v 8th grade Riverside; Coming up with their best defensive performance of the year, Heppner's 8th grade Pony boys rolled to a 28-19 win over Riverside Thursday at Riverside. The Ponies shut down the Pirate shooters who were limited to six field goals on 34 attempts. The win left the Ponies with a 6-1 mark on the season. Doug Holland hit double figures with 10 points, Dorian Forrar had seven, Rick Klaus added six and Don Lott totaled four points for Heppner. Jackie Mollahan added 12 and Geri Grieb scored five. Pony boys take 7th graders fall taking down 24 rebounds to 16 for the Pirates. Holland grab bed seven boards and Lott collected four. Derrick Trumball led the Pirates with 13 points. Riverside's 17 fouls in the game sent the Ponies to the line for 28 attempts and they converted 12 for a 43 per cent showing. After taking a one point margin into the locker room at halftime, heppner Junior High's 7th grade boys were held to only two points in the second half as Riverside 1111-3 rebounded in the game, they forced Weston-McEwen into numerous errors as Healy came up with 21 possessions gained, and both Lori Rhea and Grieb picked up 12. breezed past the Ponies for a 28-14 win Thursday on the Pirates' home court. Heppner was unable to get its offense untracked in the final two periods and were dealt their third loss of the year against four victories. Tom Huston and Mike Currin both scored four points to lead the Ponies and Andy Samples, Monty Hoylan and Greg Connor each added two points. Dave Dalton led the Pirates with 13 points in the game.
