By turning radio KOHU,
Hermiston, on the fourth and
fifth Thursdays each month,

Meet county government offi
cials. ..for all 4-H'ers
"Know Your County Gov
ernment" Thursday, Dec. 29, 1
p.m. at the Courthouse, Hepp
ner. We encourage all 4-H
members and leaders to
attend. Notices of the event
were mailed to all leaders,
with a request that they notify
their club members. This is
the first time such an event
has been planned for 4-H in
our county for many years!
Judge D.O. Nelson has made
arrangements, and is hoping
to see all 4-H'ers there!
Oregon 4-H Foundation Direc
tor to Visit County
Ron Campbell, who has
recently accepted the position
of Oregon 4-H Foundation
director will visit Morrow
County January 10, to meet
interested 4-H leaders and
acquaint himself with the
vicinity. The Foundation has
recently broadened their
range of activities, appointed
new comittee members from
the various parts of Oregon.
Louis Carlson, 4-H leader, well
known farmer and community
leader, has been appointed to
represent Morrow County on
the committee. More informa
tion will be released on plans
for Mr. Campbell's visit when
they are completed.
State Fair Hostesses, Hosts,
and Clerks Needed
There are opportunities for
interested adults to serve as
clerks for judges at state fair
next fall.... or as hosts and
hostesses in the 4-H section of
the state event. This is a great
opportunity for us to assist
with the state 4-H program..
..and learn all about it at the
same time! Any one interes
ted should call me at once, as
application forms are due in
our state office January 13.
One Day Fashion Career
Seminar
An opportunity for young
people interested in any phase
of the fashion industry to
"hear it like it is" from those
engaged in fashion related
careers is sponsored yearly by
the Fashion Group of Port
land. Dated this year for
February 18 at the Portland
Art Museum, the event re
quires pre-registration. The
event is tuned to the high
school-college age group and
includes information on edu
cational background required
or needed, where and how to
look for job opportunities, the
hard work involved in such,
careers. ..and other pertinent
information. We attended the
event last year, and found it a
very informative and interest
ing day. ...and would recom
mend it to young people who
have dreams of working in a
fashion related career. It is a
one day, action packed event,
with registration fee including
lunch. We hope to have
registration forms soon, and
would be happy to share our
thoughts on the event with any
one intersted!
Speaking of Fashion...
As soon as the jingle bells
stop ringing, it seems the
fashion industry thinks spring.
Already the city stores are
showing spring fashions. ...and
the fashion magazines are
saying '78 is the year of the
dress. ..and soft, soft, soft!
Spring dress fabrics are
predicted to be prettier, sof
ter, lighter, drapier! So, while
winter has you housebound,
sew skirts. ..there is a look that
is good for every figure. ..but
be sure the look is full enough
to look soft and suggest
movement! Blouses.. ..shir
red, gathered, tucked, tied
and blousoned! Jackets. .easy,
unlined, unconstructed..to go
over everything! Pants....
either classic or the now
narrow leg !
And if Santa didn't bring
just what you needed, and you

still Have a yen for winter
fashions... right now is a good i
time to stock up! Stores are
featuring gigantic after-holiday
sales with many good
buys for the weather we'll be
seeing for some time ! But be a
wise shopper.. .some times a
bargain isn't a bargain! Buy
what you need, after thought-;
ful consideration of your
present wardrobe, and future '
fashion trends! Look those
"marked downs" over care
fully, too, to determine if they
are soiled or damaged! No
thing is a bargain if you can't
use it. ..or don't need it!
But aren't fashion and
thoughts of spring a great
diversion from winter and
cold...???
A few weeks ago, a contrac
tor for Columbia Basin Elec
tric Co-op completed a line
rebuild of an area along
Quimby and Hoover streets in
Fossil with some of it in the
downtown area. The line
rebuild included some new
poles, some heavier primary
line, new services and most
importantly, an upgrade in
primary voltage and trans
former voltage.
Presently, the Columbia
Basin Electric area is rebuild
ing lines in the downtown area
in east Fossil. Several new
poles will be installed, bare
secondary will be eliminated,
several services will be
changed out to heavier size
and transformers and pri
mary line voltage will be
changed.
The City of Fossil rebuild is
a part of a long range
improvement program. Ap
proximately half of the city of
Fossil has been upgraded
from 2.4 KV voltage to
7.2-12.47 KV voltage.
The higher primary voltage
does several things for the
member and system: reduces
line losses in distribution of
power; increases the line
carrying capacity with the
capability at high voltages;
allows , for better secondary
voltage levels as a result of the
increased capacity ability and
obviously, works strongly to
ward cost-conscious energy ,
conservation - concepts. .The
heavier customer services
and larger transformers are
of additional service improvement.
Columbia ' Basin will be ,
continuing in 1578 to work on
the system improvements in
Fossil. ' ;
