Flood hazard
study underway

Detailed studies of flood
hazard areas in Morrow
County, and in the communi
ties of Heppner, Lexington
and lone, is now underway by
the Walla Walla District Corps
of Engineers and funded by
the. Federal Insurance Admi
nistration under the authority
of the National Flood Insur
ance Act of 1968 and the Flood
Protection Act of 1973.
The purpose of each study is
to examine and evaluate the
flood hazard areas which are
developed or likely to be
developed and to determine
flood elevation for those
areas.
The studies will be used by
each community to determine
flood plain zoning ordinances
and to carry out flood plain
management objectives of the
National Flood Insurance Pro
gram. They will also be used
as a basis for determining
appropriate insurance pre
mium rates for buildings and
their contents in the communi
ties. Preliminary work has al
ready begun with hydraulic
engineers from Walla Walla
doing a field review to
determine where cross sec
tions should be taken. The
studips should be completed
by April, 1979.
