Other varsity players receiving awards were: Diane Holland, most aggressive; Shelley Thompson, most improved; and Jackie Mollahan, top server. The awards were presented at the annual ceremony held in the school cafeteria. Calling it a "most unusual season grid coach John Spor seen said he was proud of the way his team came back after a somewhat shaky early season. "It took a lot of intestinal fortitude to come back after the loss to Riverside," Spor seen said of his team which put together a string of tough victories to finish alone in second place in conference standings. In addition to Marlin, spe cial awards went to Marty Smith, Best Lineman; Dennis Peck, Best Back, Bryce Pow ell, Most Improved and Bruce Young, Most Inspirational. To the 1977 Filly volleyball team, Coach Sherri Brock presented awards to Jackie Mollahan, Top Server; Diane Holland, Most Aggressive; and Shelley Thompson, Most Improved, to go along with Healy's MVP. Six volleyballers were hon ored as Heppner's representa tives to the conference all-star list. Mollahan and Healy were both named to the first team; Janice Healy was picked for the second team and Holland, Laurie Harrison and Marie Yocom received Honorable Mention status. Following the presentation of awards HHS Principal Jim Bier said the evening repre sented a fulfillment of two aspects of the athletic pro gram as seen from the administrator's viewpoint'; Bier said the objectives of "turning out the. best ladies and gentlemen we can and involving as many students as possible" had both been real ized by the fall sports teams at the high school. He credited the coaches and the players for completing a successful season. The Cards carried eight freshmen, nine sophomores, three juniors and only two seniors. ... - ,. As it turned out, both of the seniors missed more than half; the season due to injuries. None of the starters weighed more than 175 pounds and most were considerably lighter. Not exactly the makings of a promising year. But a closer look told a different story. The sophomores had spent their first year on the field rather than on the bench. The experiences gained in that campaign were carried over. What . the Cards lacked in size they compensated with determination. The result was a successful year, a winning season and the prospect of better things to come for the football fortunes of lone High School.
