arts. While in Germany the
Stewarts toured the country.
Vernon said the tour buses
were great and were equipped
with stereo music. They
visited three castles in the
Bavarian Alps that had been
occupied during King Lud
wig's era. The Stewarts said
they were very beautiful, with
wood carvings that had been
carefully preserved with var
nish and were highly polished.
Marble was used extensively
in the castles in stairways and
window sills. Also, many of
the homes used marble.
The Stewarts said the for
ests in Germany are culitva
ted and cared for much like a
park. The Forest Master
guards over it and is very
strict. He knows where every
animal lives and guards over
them as well.
In the school ststem, a
student must be a straight A
student to get into college,
since there are only four
major colleges in Germany.
They are much more strict
than in this country, according
to the Stewarts. Most students

They were accompanied by
the time they are in the fourth

by serving as apprentices.
The Stewarts admired the
way the homes and country
side were kept so neat and
clean. Every family would
care for the street in front of
their home.
The people were very con
servative with water and
electricity. Most drove a
smaller type car to save on
gas that was $1.40 a gallon.
The Stewarts said people walk
more in Germany than here.
They saw some who would
walk two or three miles to a
neighboring community to go
to church. No business or
industry was open on Sunday.

weight of silver dollars. They
each came away with a sucker
