SIX The Gazette-Times, Heppner, Ore., Thursday, July 21, 1977 Swimmers third in Invitational More than 150 swimmers from five teams packed the city pool Sunday for the Heppner Invitational Swim Meet. Seventy-two events and eight hours later, Heppner swimmers found themselves in third place with 437 points, Smooth... Penny Connor shows the fluid motion of the breaststroke in the girls 8 and under division at the Heppner Invitational swim meet here last Sunday. Penny picked up several second place finishes to add to Heppners point total. behind Hood River's winning total of 653 and Prineville's second place score of 482. Trailing Heppner were the Hermiston 'B' team with 69 points and White Salmon with 36. Heppner wound up with six relay wins and ten individual winners as several swimmers turned in their best times of the year. Relay winners uncluded the girls 9-10 team of Ellen Arbogast, Kelli Bergstrom, Kinzua cops a Kinzua breezed to a 16-1 victory over Marlette in a five inning contest last week in Hermiston. The visitors took command early, scoring six runs in the first inning. Mike Smith, Keith Curnutt, Marvin Lane and Mike Rowell drew four of the eight walks allowed by Mar lette pitchers and Jamie Sands, John McCabe and Jamie Query added singles. McCabe blasted a three run homer in the third to pad the lead before Marlette got on the scoreboard with a single run home run in the fourth. Kinzua followed with six more runs in the bottom of the fourth on singles from Cur nutt, Delbert Binschus, Dave Eckman, Rowell, Gearl Seal, Buck Query and Gary Kemp. In a game that went seven innings Wednesday night at Lexington, Kinzua squeezed by the Hermiston Herald 9-7. Kinzua racked up five errors but still manage to hold off their opponents. In the first, Hermiston jumped out in front by scoring two runs. Kinzua came back with runs off Bill Baker's single and a Herald error allowing Jamie Sands to score. Hermiston was held score less in the second and Kinzua rallied for two more runs on Mike Rowell's triple and Dave Shelly Biddle and Stephanie Sumner which placed first in both the freestyle and medley relay events. Other winners were the girls 13-14 medley relay team of Karen Kenny, Sandra Ward, Sonja Biddle and Deann Connor; the boys j. ... ---. 13-14 free and medley relay of Shane Laughlin, Rick Smith, Mike Hart and John Briden back; and the 9-10 mixed relay of Ellen Arbogast, Kelli Berg strom, Tom James and Cam George. In the individual events, Kelli Bergstrom won four events with times of 52.0 in the girls 9-10 60-meter free; 1:05.8 in the breast stroke; 1:05.5 in the butterfly and 2:14.2 in the 120-meter individual medley. Rick Smith took three firsts in Eckman's single. Gary Kemp singled but was unable to score. Pete Turpin came up with the lone run for Hermiston in the third. Heppner exploded for five runs in the fifth as Kemp, Baker, Curnutt and Rowell singled. Trailing 9-3 in the sixth, the Over the Tee Cup by Cindy Kerr Headlining golf news this week was a women's nine-hole tournament, July 13, at Con don. Pat Edmundson lead the Heppner women with a fourth place finish in the first flight and Eddie Skow contributed the long drive for the contest. " Linda Padberg and Karen Dubuque showed well in the second flight taking second and fourth, respectively. Other ladies action this week included Tuesday play, July 12. Cindy Kerr won low gross for the day followed by Linda Padberg and Mary the boys 13-14 bracket with winning times of 1:02.8 in the breaststroke; 57.6 in the fly and 2:00.6 in the I.M. Sandra Ward won the girls 13-14 breaststroke with a time of 56.9 and Karen Kenny ' continued her winning ways in the girls 13-14 backstroke with a time of 50.2. Mardel James also took home a first place trophy for her winning time of 1:01.4 in the girls 11-12 butterfly. Rodeoers place At the Hermiston jackpot team roping competition last week Cindy Dougherty and Jerry Gentry placed second in the novice roping. Stock for the series of five ropings is furnished by Bob Steagall, Bob Mahoney and pair Herald fought back with four runs by Green, Rogers, Ruhl and Blessinger. Kinzua held off a final Hermiston rally in the seventh on a diving catch by right-fielder Mike Smith to seal the victory. This Thursday, July 21, Kinzua meets Gormet in a 7 p.m. game in Lexington. Kennison tieing for low net honors, while Vi Lanham won the least putts award. John Edmundson and Fran cis Doherty tied for low gross in Sunday men's play, July 17. Taking low net was Dave Campbell and the least putts award went to Chuck Starks. Gary Hunt won the long drive contest while Ron Jones took the KP award. In coming events, the men and women will travel to Kinzua Sunday July 24. Satur day, July 23, the club will hold a family barbecue. August 2 the women will travel to Condon for 18-holes. At the recent Union Rodeo held July 9-10, Jana Steagall received a handmade leather belt for winning the Ail Around of the show. Brett Sherer placed first in jr. barrels and jr. poles. Cindy Dougherty and Dave Steagall placed second in team roping while Cliff Dougherty placed fifth in jr. barrels and fifth in calf roping. Janice Healy finished fourth in sr. barrels.
