EIGHT The Gazette-Times, Heppner, Ore., Thursday, July 7, 1977 High, Wishart wed V r 'it 1 i l ; i with Justine Weatherford ..Last Friday's inauguration ceremonies for Judge Nelson drew a standing-room-only crowd of wellwishers to the courthouse. The Governer's representative, his legal counsel, Ed Sullivan, had many nice things to say about retiring Judge Jones and about new Judge Nelson. In the first few seconds after he was officially sworn in by D A. Doherty, Judge D.O. got a very warm, big, kiss from County Clerk Sadie Parrish. 1977's Fourth of July weekend was so much quieter than the Bicentinnial Celebration last year with its several dedications the breakfast in the park, and the parade. This year droves of residents took off for special events in other communities and family visits. Several were taking in Ukiah's Basaue Barbecue, a goodly number were going to Condon for the festivities and rodeo there, some went to other surrounding towns, and some fled to big cities Seattle, Portland and Spokane. When we hear on tv and read in the news about the terrible happenings at youth camps, we think how good it is that the many who camp in this county are carefully guarded by fine adult counselors. The Youth Conservation Corp group again living and working out of the Tupper Gaurd Station is, as always, composed of carefully chosen 15 to 18 year old youths from every section of our state. They work diligently during the weekdays under the direction of professional leaders and on weekends they get away from work to learn more about the attractions of Eastern Oregon. I feel bereaved just now because an old friend of mine, a favorite newspaper, is about to die. The Observer, the Dow Jones and Co. Inc. national, "in depth" newspaper, is being discontinued. The publishers say it has been losing company money for several years. It has been a great publication staffed by excellent reporters. Each week after I read The Observer I have taken my copy to the Heppner Library where occasionally students have found it helpful. I really feel very disappointed to have the paper die and I don't expect to be nearly as well informed from now on. July and August are favorite "Visiting grandparents" months. The Winn Crists have three visiting grandchildren here from Colorado. Rachel Harnett has a most helpful granddaughter Dawn visiting from Issaquah, Wash. Hospital notes Oregon students who read ten or more books this summer will receive a reading certicicate signed by Govern or Bob Straub and State School Sup. Verne A. Duncan. "Studies show reading ach ievement drops during the summer months," Duncan said "We hope this . will encourage students to contin ue reading. After reading the books, students should list the titles in a letter to Duncan in Salem. The letter must include a signature by fa parent or gaurdian and a return ad dress. The books must be completed by Labor Day. The Heppner Primary and Grade School libraries are now open Monday through Friday, 8 to 12 and 1 to 4. The students may pick up their form letters to send to State School Superintendent Dun can in either library. fc ' - i.W f, !
