SIX The Gazette-Times, Heppner, Ore., Thursday, June 9, 1977 Field days set for June 16, 17 The annual Field Days for the Columbia Basin Agricul tural Research Center at Pendleton and Moro are set for June 16 at Pendleton and June 17 at Moro, reports Harold Kerr, Morrow County Extension Agent. The two programs have proven very popular with wheat producers in the Col umbia Basin and this year's programs should also be well received, Kerr said. The morning program be gins at 10 a.m., June 16, at the Pendleton Station east of Pendleton. Program high lights include: Drought Stress; Plant Growth and Yield; Remote Sensing for Resource Management; and ARS Wheat Research in Re view. During the afternoon, par ticipants will tour the ex perimental plots on the sta tion, including a stop at Feed Grain Research. Also planned is a review of instruments used for moisture stress re search and weed control, testing variety plots, cereal diseases and others. The Sherman Station Field Day is set for June 17 at Moro, beginning at 1:30 p.m. Pro gram highlights there in clude: managing stubble Mint comes to Morrow If the air is fresher and you detect a pleasant new frag rance, give the farmers of Morrow County the credit, reports Harold Kerr, Morrow County Extension Agent. Mint is the new crop. The growers are Ken Peck and Jerald Rea of Lexington. Both men received 2,000 foundation mint plants the past week which were produced at Ore gon State University under completely disease-free con ditions. An ordinance adopted last winter by the State Depart ment of Agriculture requires that only disease-free certified mint can be produced in Morrow County, Kerr said. The two growers, along with Bill Towery of Madras, who planted foundation mint last year on Far West Farms, are the first mint growers in the county. The 2,000 plants are grown in a garden-size plot this year and next year the roots will be sufficient to plant 10 to 20 acres. The plants are being grown for the roots as there is a big demand for disease-free roots in mint production areas, Kerr said. t n Pumps by LayneS Bowler Meeting Tomorrow's Agricultural Needs Today. Cutting guidelines set for firewood Representatives of the U.S. Forest Service and Kinzua Corp., have announced plans for issuing personal use fire wood permits to area resi dents. No firewood cutting will be allowed on either Forest Ser vice or Kinzua lands without a valid permit. Permits will be issued for up to ten cords of firewood. Commercial fire wood permits are available from the Forest Service for 50 cents per cord of firewood to be resold. There is no charge for personal use permits, how ever, there are qualifications as to where wood can be cut and what can be cut for fire wood. This is one reason permits are required. Gener ally, only dead and down logs can be cut for firewood. Permits for firewood from Kinzua can be obtained at the Corporation's office in Hep pner or Kinzua. Permits for firewood from the Heppner Ranger District of the USFS can be obtained from the Forest Service office in Hep pner. After that date, Forest Service permits will be issued only for specific areas where fire patrolmen will be working. All firewood cutters are re quired to have a screen in their chainsaws to trap par ticles of hot carbon which may start a fire. These screens are to be .023 mesh and are available at most chainsaw dealers. In addition to the special screen, firewood cut ters are required to have an axe, bucket, shovel, and fire extinguisher with them while cutting firewood. Bring your chainsaw and fire tools with you so that they can be in spected before your firewood permit is issued. Firewood cutters should carry their permits with them while cutting or transporting firewood. They should be pre pared to show this permit to Kinzua employees, Forest Service personnel or law en forcement officers. French noted that cattle producers during 1976 include 4-H and FFA members any person that raised at least one head during the year. French said the cattlemen have neglected to promote their product to the public in the past and that the time is at hand where cattle production has to be brought into interde pendence with all other areas of the economy. "The consumer will benefit as much as the cattleman in that prices will be stabilized on the market place," said French.
