We will be dining at St. Patrick's Hall tonight hope we see you there. O'llara declares, "We don't need any of them new-fangled scales in Ireland. There's an aisy way to weigh a pig without scales. Get a plank and put it across a stool, then get a big stone. Put the pig on one end of the plank and the stone on the other end and shift the plank until they balance. Then you just guess the weight of the stone, and you've got the weight of the pig." The early-day Irish here made this a "little bit of Ireland," a community recognized widely for the "Irish" teams its high school fielded, for its large and active Ancient Order ol T About Hibernians Lodge and for its early and steadily flourishing St. Patrick's Church. Right now, under the leadership of our good Irish Mayor Jerry Sweeney and with guidance from Ireland's own Father John O'Brien, it is an ideal time to talk up the county's Irish heritage and spread about Irish charm, maybe laced with a bit of blarney. "My son," said the robust Irish millionare, "when I was your age, I carried water for a gang of bricklayers." "I'm mighty proud of you, Dad. If it hadn't been for your pluck and perserverance, I might have had to do something like that myself." This particular week I wish Justine had a real Irish ring like Colleen, Kathleen and Ilene, but it is decidedly non-Irish coming to America with my grandmother Justine Hamm from Alsace-Lorraine. Speaking of names, all the females at the Gazette-Times have rhyming names Eileen, Sharlene, Janene and Justine. "Ah, Bridget, how do you like your new boss? "Oh, he ain't too bad, Sheila only he's kinda bigoted." "Whadda y'mean, bigoted?" "Well, he thinks words can only be spelled one way." After the super Irish Stew dinner at St. Patrick's tonight, the library is having the last two hours of its book sale. Books and magazines still on sale tables will go to half-price. There'll be some real bargains with magazines from two for 5 cents and books from two for 10 cents on up to a few collectibles at $1. Remember, book lovers, your last chance for such bargains this year. I heard recently that Hazel Bauman is retiring as manager of the fair buildings. Hazel has been such an important part of the successful fairs for many years devoted efforts will be missed. Hear & Mr. and Mrs. Tom Kirkelie of Tacoma, Wash., were weekend guests at the home of Mrs. Laura Holtz. Mrs. John Springer and family of North Bend were guests of Mr. and Mrs. John Jepson and family. Staying at the Robert Jep son home for the weekend were Mr. and Mrs. Mike Elder and daughter of Eugene, Mr. and Mrs. Bill Mault from Coos Bay, Mrs. Fred Larson and daughters from Portland, and Mrs. Mary Holtz from Seattle, Wash. Mr. and Mrs. Darrell James and family from Turner were guests of Mrs. Vera Reit mann. All of the above visitors were here for the Carol Holtz and David Glen wedding on Saturday afternoon. Follow ing the reception, about 60 people gathered at the home of Mrs. Laura Holtz for a buffet supper. Guests included rela tives, members of the wedding party, and those v.lio helped with the wedding and recep tion. Mr. and Mrs. Gary Weeber (nee: Jody Snow) of Eugene spent last Wednesday at the id Yellow Onions No. 1 Potatoes now. Van Winkle. They and another daughter, Leora Kane, of San Francisco, and Mr. Van Winkle visited his mother, Cleo, at Hershey's Nursing Home last week. Carolyn Howard is a patient at Pioneer Memorial Hospital. Mr. and Mrs. Jack Mounts visited here with Pat Wright and Ferida Majeske, who is a patient in the hospital. The heart fund drive for Lexington is finished for the year. The girls were very pleased that they had done better than previously. They thank all the people of Lex ington. Reminders: The district meeting of the Rebekahs' Lodge will be at the IOOF Hall in Lexington Mar. 19. State president Melvina Mellinger will be present. Lexington Grange will meet Mar. 21. The present facilities do not adequately house our growing congrega tion. Sunday School begins at 9:45 and the morning worship ser vice at 11:00 each week at our present location on the corner of Gale and Willow. A Sunday evening service is also held, beginning at 7 p.m. Wed nesday night at 7 p.m. begins family night, where the con gregation breaks into several groups for study. Smith visits Jamie Smith, daughter of Rosieand Kenneth Smith, is in Heppner this week to visit with friends and family.
