Reid's Mill, about 1916 or 1917. was one of the early day lumber mills in Morrow County. It was early era were Parker, llayden and Reid. started about 1901 by James Reid and his family from Scotland. Big mills of the Reid Mill history Reid's Mill, located about five miles from Parker's Mill on Thorn Creek, was one of the active early day lumber mills in Morrow County. The mill was established by James Reid, who came from Scotland with his family to Bradley, S.D., and moved to Heppner in 1901. The mill was located about 20 air miles directly south southwest of Heppner. The business was established with second-hand sawmill equip ment, purchased at Hood River. In 1902, Robert Reid, one of five sons, was killed at the mill. In 1910, James Reid sold to two other sons, Martin and Arthur, and Reid Bros, was born. The pictures which accom pany this article were taken around 1916 or 1917. All that is left to mark the old mill sight today is a sawdust pile. The mill was destroyed by fire. Lois Winchester Reid, daughter of Martin Reid, is the only Reid living in Morrow County. Clara Gertson Reid, daugh ter of James Reid, died in March of last year. A grand daughter, Irene Ahorn, re turned to Heppner to live last year. She had been teaching near Medford. Travel to the Reid Mill in the early days was accomplished by following Thorn Creek through Ruggs. How it works. (continued from page 15) tern on dryers. We have one 20 section 8 deck and one 14 section 8 deck Moore-Oregon Longitudinal Dryers. I might mention that our propane costs were approaching $7.00 per M prior to this installation. Now, we're down around $.50. The large bins are for coarse fuel from our dry hog in the plywood and shavings from our sawmill planer. The coarse fuel goes through two Grundler hammer mills and into the two smaller bins where it is metered into blowers to the Energex cycio burners. The 20 section dryer has a 45mm btu. Energex eyclo burner, combustion air cham ber, fuel intake and the 68" heat chamber. On the 14 section dryer, we have a 27mm btu. burner. Being more or less pioneers with these burners, Kinzua has learned a lot along the way. To operate successfully, these burners need T.L.C. If they get it, and in our operation they get it, they will perform well. If they don't get it, watch OUi. Lay-up system Kinzua has the Prentice Lay-up System. The infeed is the secret to this type of system. If the veneer is not properly prepared at this point, the only other piece of machinery we need in the dryend is a good hog. Kinzua has done some ex tensive reworking of crowder assemblies, and built a new hot-meld applicator on the string machines. We are doing a pretty fair job of preparing our inner-plies. Clean and paint Kinzua has a Globe gravity flow curtain coater, and was getting more blips than two people could spray. A Swieko Filter has all but eliminated the blipping problem. All glue from the glue pit and the return from the head is filtered through an 80 mesh screen to the holding tank through two cuno fillers to the c-c head. Cleanliness is very important to a good curtain. Kinzua paints its finish units of sheathing automatically as they travel to the bander. Why paint the end product? Our stud sheathing (red) and our N.C. (blue) is ready for shipment. Kinzua doesn't paint the product to cover defects, but instead for ap pearance. Air bag use Air bags are used in all freight cars. We feel that we want our product to arrive at its destination as we shipped it. Expensive? We have never, as I recall, had a freight damage claim. Not in the actual plywood operation, the fuel bin with Hooper-Grafston live bottom reclaimers has ended a very big problem in the operation. For two years, it has cut out power house downtime almost completely. The bark, fine shavings and any other burn ables from the entire complex are routed to this fuel bin.
