Eckman stayed on top of the six team, Sunday night league. Eckman moved to an un marred 4-0 with a 47-38 win over Greenup. The winners were sparked by the play of David, Kenny and Rob Eck man, along with Lankford and Cornutt. A tall, burly Berg strom jerked down the re bounds and hit from the side. Other winners on the Eckman unit include John Healy, Bob Ployhar, McLaughlin, Doher ty and Carl Harrison. Mark Greenup, Coiner and Barber led Greenup. Sands stayed in a tie for second with a 59-56 overtime victory over last place Ernst. Ernst led throughout the game until the fourth period. Sands overcame a nine point halftime deficit to take a lead, then lose it, then save it. Mike Egland, a 6-7 pivot man, accounted for most of the Sands' points. John McCabe and Watkins hit from the outside and Watkins was also an instrumental rebounder. McCabe hit two free throws in the last minute to tie the game and send it into OT. Mike Schwartz and Henry paced Ernst along with the team captain, Ernst. Schwartz and Ernst drove the lane and Henry fired a hot percentage from outside. In the 9 p.m. game, Ball outlasted Pointer, 56-46. La Verne Van Marter sparked the Ball winners in the wild, free-for-all basketball game. The game was reported to have gotten out of hand with no incidents but a lot of rolling around on the hardwood. From the line, the Mustangs were 17 of 32 and Condon settled for 25 tries and made 11. No overwhelming quarter outdid Heppner. The Mus tangs were outscored in all but the last period where they whittled seven points off the Condon margin. VERN'S UI1IS11 STATION ' :: Condon Blue Devils stuck it to Heppner's Mustangs Satur day, poking the 1-15 Mustangs with their fifteenth loss via a poor second period, 66-53. In three quarters of bas ketball; the first, third and fourth, Heppner and Condon matched points and ended in a draw, 45-45. But Condon blew the Mus tangs out with a 21-8 scrubbing in the second quarter. Brian Shaffer had a field goal and four of eight from the line in the second period to lead the Blue Devils. In the second period, Hep pner was outscored from the line, 10-6. The second period's line duty was normal for the game. Referees' whistles were heard at a rate of 2.03 fouls per minute. Heppner was called for 34 and Condon 31. At the line, Condon was 26 for 43. Heppner was 19 for 30. If all one for ones had been made, the total points made on free throws for the night would have been 95. Condon also made five field ers in the second period to Heppner's one by Bruce Young. Brian Marlin paced Hep pner for the second night in a row, putting nine on the Mus tang scoreboard. Wayne Seitz and Jerry Cutsforth had eight. "It's hard to explain,", Hep pner Coach Chris Borgen said this week. "I think we came out ready, we played hard defensively, but we never got untracked offensively. We let them get ahead and played tight and pressed. It was disappointing after Friday's game. I think it was a downer for everybody." From the field, Heppner was 17 for 66. But the story was how they split it up. In the first half, Heppner was a dismal three for 28. Free throws accounted for 10 first half points. In the second half, things warmed up and the Mustangs hit 14 of 38. The first half percentage was about 10 per cent. The second half was brighter, 36 per cent. , Condon made 20 field goals on 68 tries. Condon was nine for 17 from the line in the fourth period. Borgen said the officiating was not the best, but that it was "no alibi." 8 8 18 19 53 11 21 15 19 66 Haguewood 7.
