Obituaries County unemployment rate down Edgar Bennett Morrow County's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for October showed a decline to 4.1 per cent, down from 6.0 per cent in September and down from 5.4 per cent in October of 1975. Decreasing employment in the county without a pro portionate and corresponding increase in unemployment (the result of people leaving the labor force) stems from the opening of school, season cutbacks in agriculture, and layoffs in the wholesale potato packing sheds due to a poor market. There was a gain in the county for food processing and in government, due to edu cational gains. The seed corn and potato harvest in addition to fall seeding dominate the agricul tural scene in the Boardman area. Lumber and wood em ployment gained in the coun ty. A modest increase in the work force at the Portland General Electric coal-fired construction site in Morrow County represented the only change in contract construc tion. The non-manufacturing losses were associated with severe cutbacks in the fresh pack potato industry, because of the depressed market con ditions. Edgar Allen Bennett, 85, died in Heppner Tuesday, Nov. 23. He was born Feb. 27, 1891, at Lonerock, the son of E.J. and Ellen Brown Bennett. Mr. Bennett was a lifetime resident of the area and a 57 year member of B. B.P.O.E. No. 358. He worked for many years In a local hardware store and later owned and operated Central Market, in partnership with Mrs. C.W. McNumer. He was an ardent sportsman who enjoyed hunt ing and fishing.
