HHS musicians shine Bryce Powell lopped off an excellent choral and band concert Monday night at the Heppner High School gym. Powell, tinging with the high school rock ensemble, belted an America hit, "Slter Golden Hair," io highlight and end the hour long concert. The night aUo featured the high school band and choir. Band director Jim Ackley didn't top at directing the high school band through four numbers, but hit the note himself as a member of the rock ensemble, tinging and playing the piano and guitar. John Dawson, new high school choir director. Instructed bit choir through four songs. Including contemporary, "Close To You," sung by the Carpenters; and "Let Me Be There," recently recorded by Olivia Newton-John. The band was the first group to perform, playing a John Phillip Sousa tune to start the evening and finishing strongly with hitfhliffhta of "Exodus." Midway through the performance, Ackley handed over bis baton to student director. Bill Kenny. Kenny commandeered the group through two selections from Deep River Suite. Dawson and the choir followed, starting and finishing their performance with two slower songs, "How Bright Shines the Morning Star." by Nlcotal and "Trumpet Voluntary," by Pollack. Between those two were the recent hits by singing stars. The rock ensemble out everyone back on the edge of their seats as Ackley sang "Desperado" with Powell and Deb Holland, slneinff background. An Ackley written song. "Till the End of Time," was sung by Holland, and Powell finished the night with the Impressive "America" tune. They are called Easy-Eye books and are printed in large type on non-glare paper. Persons who have trouble reading regular type oi slick paper will find these books much more pleasing. In the dozen, paperback, large-type books now ready for readers, there is a pretty good selection, including ro mance, several science fic tion, some historical fiction and several adventure stories. Sylvia McDaniel will be the evening's hostess. Thursday. Dec. 2, those interested in singing will meet to begin working on Christmas music in the church sanctu ary. That same evening. Garden Club will have a greens for the Artifactory work party in the church basement. (The public's Greens Workshop is coming there on Monday, Dec. 13, at 7 p.m.) Friday, Dec. 3. the con gregation will gather at a 8:30 p.m. potluck dinner preceding the annual Charge Confer ence. Central District Super intendent Askew Crumbley from Bend will come to join in the dinner and to preside at the Charge Conference. Sunday evening, Dec. 5. the High School Methodist Youth Fellowship under the leader ship of Vicki Tollefson is presenting a public Chili Sup- k per in the basement between 4-7 p.m. They will feed adults for $1.50 and small children for 75 cents. She also showed pictures and laid of her experiences w ith weigh! loss. She announced the district recognition day will be March 19. 1977 at Kimua. The state recognition days will be Aprd 15 and 16 in Kugene. The group also exchanged ideas for weight loss contest and incen tive programs.
