Common sense Editor: ' If you are Interested In having common sense decisions made in our state legislature, we urge you to vote for Bill Bellamy for state representative from District 55. We have known Bill for the last three years. He is the agriculture teacher at Culver High School. Bill has the ability to be a leader, is a good speaker, and can express himself very well. Because of Bill's interest in agriculture, we feel he will give us the help we need in Salem with agricultural problems. In addition, he will work for solutions to other problems in the best interest of District 53. Sincerely, Mr. and Mrs. Bob Beesley To the Editor, With all the exposure that government has had in the news media during the past couple of years, one would expect Americans to be extremely knowledgeable and vitally interested In our political process ... but are we? Are we Americans more InteresUd in politics, or do we, because we sometimes hear things we don't like, just turn off politics In our lives? How does the word politics strike you personally? Do you picture small smokey rooms filled with short, stout, cigar chewing, evil politicians greedily grasping for all the money and power they can get? v If you are turned off by politics and if you just turn politics off, consider that you cold be turning off freedom forever. Politics means nothing more than the art or science of goverpment and government is the business of the American people. Think about the business of government for just a moment; ask yourself these three questions: Am I satisfied with the way my government is being run? Are those who represent me in Washington, D.C.. truly representative of the people from my district or state? Do I feel that those who represent me in government are not working and voting towards the best interest of my country? If an honest appraisal of the situation produces answers that you don't like you can vote them out of office. Casting a ballot for a polite! candidate of your choice is not only a precious right. It is a major responsibility of citizenship. We should all remember that each vote is important. It is a passport to better government Each vote cast in a free election for a candidate who is freely selected by the person voting is sn expression of belief in the American form of government Each time you are eligible to vote and you fail to do so is a rejection of all the conceps that our great nation stands for. People who don't vote because they're too uninterested, too busy or too lazy, fail in their obligations snd responsibilities as American citizens. When people become apathetic towards government when people no longer exercise their right to select those who will lead them: when people lose interest In governing themselves, they are In grave danger of losing, their right to self government f In the last presidential election, nearly 40 million people didn't bother to exercise their right to vote; enough to change the outcome of any election. It's high time that non-voting Americans wake up to the fact that citizens take a hand in the responsibilities of government Take a good look at what your elected repesenUtive, at all levels of government are doing and what they continue to do as long as they are In office. Weigh the good points against the bad points, check their records and how they go about the task of representing the people. Then you can actively support your choice of candidates. Wawtm H. McCey State Sr. V,ice Commander, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Morrow County Commissioner, Irrigon, Ore. Thank-you Dear Friends: We would like to thank everyone who donated their time and money in Trevor's behalf. The dance and rodeo were each a big success thanks to our friends who worked so hard and came from near and far to participate in both. Our rodeoing friends and our oiher good friends certainly rallied around. People never realize how many wonderful friends they have and how many really good people there are, until moments like this. We thank each and everyone. You have made the coming months look much brighter. We are forever grateful that Trevor is doing just fine and that we live in such a wonderful community with so many good friends everywhere. To: The voters of Morrow County, Oregon When I originally ran for the office of Morrow County Clerk in 1960 I used the slogan "Save Your Tax Dollar by Re-Electing a Qualified and Trained County Clerk." I have kept that promise to you, in spite of the fact that our work load has tripled, and I am proud that we are able to continue providing full service without adding other help. Also, I had the advantage of six continuous years of practical experience before I became County Clerk. I believe that the average citizen thinks of the County Clerk as simply a registrar of deeds, County Bookkeeper,, and recorder of Instruments. Actually, the County Clerk's responsibilities are much more varied; they include duties as Clerk of the Circuit Court, Clerk of the County Court, Clerk of the Board of Equalization, Supervisor of Elections, Budget Officer for the County, and, other miscellaneous obs defined by Statute, Including Issuing passports, registering voters, and etc. Obviously, , a County Clerk Is not going to get bored between elections. Since our vaults were bursting at the seams, I converted to a microfilm record system In 1968, and this has saved space and has also meant that I have been able to maintain the work load with the assistance of only one deputy. I am proud that we are able to continue providing full service without adding other help. Though this has required longer hours and greater diligence, I enjoy the task of office management and am always looking for new ways to provide greater service with the resources we have. I have other experiences and Interests to offer to the Voters. I am a past President of the State Association of Oregon Clerks and Recorders, a member of the Episcopal Church and a Democrat. Concluding, I can never express In words the gratitude to the citizens of Morrow County, all of whom I consider my friends, for electing me to serve as their County Clerk and am again asking for your support In this election. Sincerely, Sadie Parrlsh, your present County Clerk Sadie Parrlsh Candidate for County Clerk "DON'T LET THEM CONFUSE YOU. YOUR NO VOTE ON 9 IS A VOTE FOR NEEDED NUCLEAR ENERGY." With all due respect to my (rtends in politics, lew ol them are qualllled to sit In Judgment on nuclear energy. This measure would allow a minority ol only 1 1 senators to control Its development.
