Celebrators gather on United Methodist Church steps after
services Sunday.
Methodist Church 100th
anniversary held here
People came from Gooding,
ID, Vancouver, WA, the Port
land area, Salem, Milton
Freewater, Pendleton, and
Arlington to join in the 100th
Anniversary Celebration at
the Heppner United Methodist
Church last weekend. Several
groups from other Heppner
churches also joined in the
festivities.
More than 100 partook of the
potluck dinner on Saturday .
night. Pastor Tollefson intro-,
duced the visiting clergymen ' '
and other guests. Rev. Mel
Dixon and his wife Nancy, who
served the Heppner church
from 1962 into 1969, presented
a vocal duet. There was group
singing, too, with Pauline Mil
ler, the church organist, ac
companying the singers on the
piano.
I Bishop Jack M. Tuell told
about his recent trip to Ire
land. His informal remarks
were amusing, timely, inter
esting and inspirational.
Rev. Grace Drake, whose
birthday fell that day, was

Mrs. Herman Green super

assisted by her daughter
Margaret, her daughter-in-law,
a niece and many of the
church ladies. Barbara James
decorated the tables and Fay
Pierce planned the program.
The Centennial Worship
Program on Sunday morning
was written by the minister,
' Steve Tollefson, who led the
congregation in the responsive
selections and opened and
closed the service.
Bishop Tuell 's sermon, en
titled "Now Thank We All Our
God" dealt with the past,
present and future of the
world church. Mike Howell
was liturgist and Pauline
Miller offered several special
organ selections, "Adagio in
D" and "Praise Ye The Triune
God." Tom James was candle

arranged by Mrs. Kenneth
Batty and Mrs. Howard Bry
ant in the dining room.
On both Saturday and Sun
day! many enjoyed the exhibit
arranged by Louise Moyer
Wood and others. Especially
interesting were displays
from the Alec and Mattie
Green family and the old Bible
and album of pictures loaned
by the descendants of Albert
Wright.
Several men and women
wore remarkable historic
clothing for the weekend
events. Frances Mitchell
came in a 50-year-old dress
and Ella Smith and Louise
Wood wore dresses much
older than that, which they
had preserved. Herman Green
wore a very fancy vest.
Each person who attended
the Centennial was given a
souvenir booklet about the
Heppner church.
