La Verne Van Marter stated that the word homecoming was meant for the alumni of the schools, and how far we are from the meaning. Maybe class reunions should be held around the schools homecoming games. Just a thought Mrs Owen Leathers visited with her granddaughter and husband, Mr. and Mrs. Doug Flatt, Condon, over the weekend. Alena Anderson has been visiting in Portland for the past two weeks with her daughters. Dee Martin and Nancy Parent. . Nancy and her daughters, Lisa, Shelly and Alison brought Alena home on Friday, and spent the weekend here. Tricia Gunderson and Fern Healy were up from Portland this weekend visiting with the Eddie Gundersons and friends. On the front page of the Sunday's Oregonian woman's section is a picture of Laurie McCabe. Did you see it? Barbara Cutsforth and Alta Cutsforth were in Portland last week Alta visited with her daughter, Vesta Kilkenny, and Barbara was in Salem, where her aunt underwent heart surgery. Minerva Denslinger, The Dalles, was also with Barbara in Salem. Visiting here from Lind, WA, was Kenneth and Carolyn Cutsforth. They moved to Lind from Hermiston last month. Spending the weekend deer hunting at Cutsforth Park were ' Mike and Quanita Ignowki, their son and family, Pat and Paulie Ignowki and daughters, all from The Dalles. On Saturday, they went deer hunting with Bill Collins and Archie Mumkers. Mike , managed to stir up a large thundering herd of elk. Returning from a week in the south were Bud and Harriet Batty where Bud attended his reunion of the 391st Bombardment Group, held at Hilton Head Island, SC. It has been 32 years since Bud has seen his old service buddies and he said even though his red hair has turned to blonde gray, they all knew him instantly. It was a fun reunion. They flew to Savannah. GA. from Portland, where they rented a car, driving to SC, sightseeing along the way. Mr. and Mrs. Robert E. Kelly, Portland, were weekend visitors in Long Creek, where they visited their daughter and family Mr. and Mrs. Bud McGirr. They arrived in Heppner Monday, visiting with Bob's sister and family, Mr. and Mrs. Mike Saling, returning to Portland with Lena Kelly, Bob s mother, who will be staying with them for a while. Dr. W W. Wolff and Bill Rawlins certainly know about bulbs. Dr Wolff expounded on daffodils, narcissi and jonquils, and Bill Rawlins shared facts about tulips with appreciative gardeners last Monday evening. They fielded aU the questions Garden Club members asked. Bill Rawlins is sort of launching a one-man campaign to get more crocus plantings in this area. Bemice Nash is feeling very proud of her grandson, Jody Jensen La Grande, who has been awarded a 10-day trip to Washington. D C. and New York by La Grande High School where he is a sophomore. f Methodist ladies are hunting through attics and trunks to find interesting historic clothing to wear to the church centennial events this weekend. Going home with a deer and a weekend of visiting with Mr. and Mrs. A C. Ball were Roger and Eileen Steiger, Portland. Hearing Marsha Lovgren talk about pageantry in London was exciting She described the royal coach and liveried footmen that came to the American Embassy to take our new ambassador. Ann Armstrong, to the palace to be received by Queen Elizabeth. The coach was upholstered with royal blue velvet. Don't forget the big Soroptimist fall rummage sale at the fairgrounds pavilion building this Friday and Saturday. They will have some dandy bargains! Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Lankford Haugen- evening wedding Hope Lutheran Church of Heppner was the setting for the evening wedding on Octo ber 1, uniting Pamela Ann Haugen and Clifford Lee Lankford in a double ring ceremony. The bride is the niece of Mr. and Mrs. George Luciani, Echo. The groom's parents are Mr. and Mrs. Jim Lank ford, Heppner. Pastor Mark Johnson of ficiated the ceremony. Sandy Matheny was soloist and Doris Pitzer accompanied at the Calendar deadline Alpha Theta Sorority is again sponsoring the Com munity Calendar. This offers a unique opportunity for every organization in the commun ity to publicize their regular scheduled meetings and spec ial events; also, it offers individuals an opportunity to list birthdays and anni versaries. The calendars are on sale for $1 each and 25 cents a listing. All proceeds from the sale of the calendars will be used for local philanthropic projects. The bride chose a street length dress of beige knit and tie-belt. She wore a garland of blue starburst mum and baby's breath in her hair. She carried a bouquet of blue and white carnations, baby's breath and blue streamers. Sally Matheny, Heppner, was maid of honor. She also wore a street-length dress of knit, two piece blue and white varigated combination with a belt. Steve Lankford, Heppner, was best man and ushers were John Luciani and Jim Lank ford. Irrigon 4-H night 4-H Promotion and Achieve ment Night for North Morrow County will be October 21 at 7:30 p.m. at the A.C. Houghton School in Irrigon. Everyone is welcome to attend who may be interested in 4-H Clubs. 4-H members and their parents are urged to be there. Birdine Tullis, County Ex tension Aide, will be present to explain the advantages of be longing to a 4 H Gub and to tell about new clubs such as the 4-H Pet Club. Rather than serving a dinner as in past years, ice cream sundaes will be served for refreshment. October 13. at 7:00 p.m. FFA aucfion Heppner's Future Farmers of America will hold their annual Slave Auction tonight (Thursday) at Heppner High School. All 55 members, 11 girls, 44 boys, and Hal Whitaker, advisor, will be sold to the highest bidder to perform eight hours of work. The auction is slated for 7:30 p.m. at the HHS gym. Money will pro vide for FFA activities. Sheila Cozad was at the. guest book, Brenda Lankford was candle lighter and Tiffiani Anderson passed out wedding scrolls. Cutting cake was Karen Dubuque, Patty Mathena served coffee while Karla Anderson and Pauline Ma theny served punch. Following a reception -buffet at the Elks Lodge, the couple spent the weekend away. Taxes: Morrow County has never gone over the 6 per cent limitation for the General Fund support. The tax rate for all County services has declined from $3.92 per thousand in 1973 to $2.05 In 1976-77. With the growth of the Justice of Peace Court In Irrigon, new quarters must be found; Morrow County Is right now accepting bids from contractors for a new office building in Irrigon. Re-Elect Judge Paul W. Jones Engagement announced Mr. and Mrs. Don Bennett announce the engagement of their daughter, Judy, to Don Barber, of Ukiah, OR. Don is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Barber, Ukiah, OR. He is employed by the Patterson Logging Co., Hep pner. Judy graduated from Hep pner High School in 1974 and is employed by the U.S. Forest Service, stationed as an ob server at Madison Lookout. A November 20th wedding is planned at the Heppner United Methodist Church. Lexington News Lee Wagonblast returned home last week from Odessa, WA, where she has been visiting her new grandson, Seth Andrew, who was born to Mr. and Mrs. John Wagon blast. The young man weighed 8 lbs. and six oz. and joins two brothers, Alex and Charlie. Grandmother is Lee Wagon blast, Lexington, and great grandmother is Carrie Wa gonblast, The Dalles. Darton Brown, Pendleton, and Evelyn Brown, Hermiston, are the maternal grandparents. Mr. and Mrs. Louis Eng are the proud parents of Shad Dee, a son born at Pioneer Memor ial Hospital, Heppner, last week. Shad weighed 7 lbs., 2' oz. and joins two brothers, Shawn and Shane. Maternal grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Ray Papineau and Agnes Nichols, Lexington. Venice Hendrickson and Florence McMillan were weekend visitors of Mrs. Lee Francis, Baker. Judge Deaths discounted Six deaths Monday of elderly persons follow ing Swine Flu vaccina tions back east have been discounted as natural caused deaths by coroners, according to Pat Wright, county health nurse. Wright said that deaths were not attrib uted to the vaccine. All had heart ailments.
