Page 11 "Miistong state' impressive Heppner's 5-0 Mustangs will gaunter onto the Mustang turf Friday, destined to cither remain undefeated or drop to second place. Heppner's team statistics would make any team proud. Let's look at the Mustangs through the eyes of statis ticians. Leading the Mustang de fensive attack with 81 points is Carl Christman. Despite two twisted ankles, the senior safety came up with 12 points Thursday in Athena. He has had 22 unassisted tackles this season, 25 assists, and three intercepted passes (returned for 86 yards). John Schiller has 63 points from his defensive end task force. He has come up with 10 unassisted tackles and 33 as sists. Schiller has recovered two fumbles and intercepted one pass and returned it five yards. Close behind is Marty Smith. He. has seven unas sisted tackles and 43 assists. Smith has blocked one pass and recovered one fumble. Down the line, Mark Parker has scored the Mustangs' only defensive TD. He scampered 26 yards with an Interception against Oregon Trail. Parker, with 50 points, has had 28 assists. Tim Daly has 42 points, followed by Brian Msrlln with 41. Jim Kenny with 34 (getting 24 last Thursday), Chris Rauch has 31, Tom Skow 20, Bruce Young 20, Kenny Grleb 17, Jim Wlshart 17, Chrltt Wright 15. Jeff CuUforth 15, Bob Smith 13, and Jack Yocom has 10. The Mustang offensive stats are Just as Impressive. Steve McLaughlin pace the Heppner unit with a 4.8 yard average, piling up 325 yards on 68 carries. Skow has a 3.1 average, gaining 116 yards on 37 carries. Wayne Seiti has 67 yards and a 3.0 average, followed by Marlin at 2.5, Young at 1.3 and a handful of others with less than a yard average. The team stats figure a 3.0 yard average per carry, Hep pner has gained 574 yards on the ground In 190 carries and has come up with 12 touch downs. In the air, Young and Dave AlUiott, recently Injured QB, have combined for a 46 per cent completion rate, hitting on 26 of 56 tosses. Heppner has picked up 4fi6 yards for two TDs and five Interceptions. Christman leads a pack of seven receivers. His 27.5 yard per catch average remain at the top of tha conference. He has had 10 catche for 273 yards and two touchdown. Dale lloilano' has two grabs for 52 yards and a 26 yard average. Alter that. Jeff Cuts forths 16 yard averaga Is followed by Sells at 10.5, Marlin at 9, Skow, and Jerry CuUforth at 8. The top scoring threat re mains in McLaughlin. He has 34 points to his credit, scoring five times on runs and booting four of eight extra points. Skow, Allstott and Christman have scored 18 points each, Christman has 14 points, Parker and Marlin have six points each, Bob Smith has booted three of three extra points and Holland was on the receiving end of a two point conversion pass for two points. In specialty fields, Marlin Is the leading punter with a 34 yard average on Just one punt. Parker has booted 20 punts for a 27.9 average. In kickoffs, Ron Ward has a 40 yard average in one boot. Smith has kicked off 18 times for 615 yards and a 34.2 average. Kickoff return stats show Christman leading with a 17.7 average on three returns. Dennis Peck has a 17 yard average, followed by Skow at 16, Marlin at 13.5 and Young at 8.5 yards per return. Christman is the major punt returner and has a 9.5 yard average on two returns. Team stats are what the Mustangs can boast on. They have outscored their op ponents, 101-40. By quarter, Heppner has taken a 34-0 advantage in the first period, even at 14 in the second, ahead 34-14 in the third, and again creeping ahead, 19-12 in the final. The Mustangs have a 20.1 average per game and their opponents have been held to less than two touchdowns at 8 points. Heppner has been slapped with 265 yards in penalties.
