Harold Kerr and Birdine Tullis were in charge, BIrdlne taking count of the heads and Harold being our guide. After two men boarded the bus In Lexington, it was decided the tour should no longer be called a women's, tour. With the but -full and a station wagon trailing behind, we met Bus Clough, repre sentative of Portland General Electric, In Boardman, who along with Tom Kingston, construction engineer, gave a tour of Boardman's Coal Fire Generating Site. The site Is located approximately 11 miles southwest of Boardman. man. There are no permanent buildings on the site, but by July 1980, this site will have about 1,000 employees and be operating at full capacity. It takes a good Imagination to vision that the now bare desert, with only a few trailers and earth moving equipment in sight, will have. In less than three years, permanent buildings, land scaping, generating plants and full dams that will cover about 1600 acres. It was then to a buffet lunch at the Nomad Restaurant, and then our guide, Harold, show ed us the new construction in the city of Boardman. The new homes are all nice and the city can boast that it is building with all the right toning. Next, we were given a tour of the Oregon Potato fresh packing plant. In the fresh packing plant, we watched the employees sort, grade and pack tons of Norgold Russet Potatoes. This plant has the capacity to receive and ship about 800 tons in a 10 hour day. We also recognized some of our local people who are employed by Oregon Potato. Back on the bus to the Columbia River where Oregon Potato has their pumping plants. Then a tour of the farms, canals and watch the sprink lers circle. As it was the end of the season, the sprinklers were still, with a few potato harvesters moving at the Sabre, Eastern Oregon, and Western Empire farms. The tour was a success with Harold almost losing his voice towards the end, and Birdine Just asking, "Are we all here?" Our bus driver, Jean kiJ $ cur.ir.iiT $ni9 U lone news By Eva Delegates from this area to the Annual Fall Central Pacif ic Conference of the United Church of Christ, held in Condon this past weekend, were Rev. Bifl Graham, Mrs. Fred Martin and Mr. Don Bristow. Guests were Mr. Fred Martin, Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Smouse and son Carl. The Central Pacific Con ference covers all of Oregon, , White Salmon, WA, and Southern Idaho. There were 42 churches represented by min isters and delegates to the conference. Joy Miller of Wil sonville was the moderator and the highlight of the con ference was the installation of Rev. Teruo Kawata of Port Bennett, was given a big hand as she maneuvered the bus over fields and dirt roads without a hitch. The next tour will be to Tollefsons to offend retreat Methodist Rev. Steve Tol lefson and Mrs. Tollefson will attend a weekend retreat at The Dalles over October 8, 9 and 10. The retreat is to be led by Dr. Jamison Jones, Presi dent of Iliff Theological Semi nary, Denver, Colorado. At the Sunday morning worship, a collection was taken with proceeds being given, one-half to the McCoin family and one-half to the Teton Dam Relief Fund. It is again that time of the year when our people begin to return to college. Attending Blue Mountain College are Kim Gutierrez, Arlynda Aid rich, Richard Keene, Loretta Pienning, Danny Akers, and Rick Peterson. Bob Gates, Todd Peterson, and Lori Bergs trom are attending Eastern Oregon College at La Grande, Catherine and Charles McElligott left for Portland, and with the ex perienced tour services of the Extension Service, this tour, too, will be a success. Wednesday evening was the beginning of "Oregon School Bus Drivers Training Program" held at the lone School cafeteria.
