V Pioneer school Fairview School dedicated Oscar Peterson and Roy Lieuallen look at Fairview's stone plaque. q.j poto) County School Superintendent Matt Doherty introduced others on the program and special guests at the dedicatory ceremonies on Brenner Canyon Road last Saturday afternoon. Although the pioneer Fairview School stood on land given by Milton Morgan's father, the large boulder which holds the bronz plaque prepared and presented by Oscar Peterson is located on the fence line between Morgan land and Peterson land and very close to the road. More than 60 attended the program which was opened by Gene Rietmann's skillful rendition of the National Anthem (with a surprise vocal accompaniment from Oscar's dog). Pastor Gus Nikander gave the invocation. Superintendent Doherty pointed out that this occasion was a bicentennial event and that it was worthy of Oscar to perpetuate a symbol of early education in the county. When the school was opened in 1890 it contained 57 pupils. Fairv iew was one of the more than 60 elementary districts in the county before it was consolidated with the lone schools in 1939. As a representative of the board of the Morrow County Historical Society, WAV. Weatherford welcomed guests and said a few words about the importance of early schools. Judge Peterson recalled his eight years at Fairview which was only in operation six months a year then. "It was not just a school it was a community center. We had many activities here. Sunday School met here; contests were held with other schools, especially with Gooseberry School. The spelling bees and debates were attended by all the families in the area," Peterson said. Former board members present who were honored included Roy Lieuallen, Roy Ball and Oscar Peterson. Chancellor Roy Elwayne Lieuallen said how pleased he was to be present and to help honor his father and the other board members. He pointed out that the men of the community not only gave the land, built the school, kept it up, cut and hauled the heating wood for it and often hauled water to it, but they also hired and fired the teachers and boarded them in their homes. The chancellor pointed out that Oregon's pioneers were family folk and were primarily farmers not gold seekers or exploiters of animals, fish and timber as the pioneers of our neighboring states. These farmers and family folk were quick to build schools and churches. He recalled Fairview as he know it during his eight years there, describing the building, the cistern and barn, the playground teeter-totter and the baseball diamond that had its third base out in the road. Dr. Lieuallen was so pleased to greet old classmates from lone High School mentioning Charles O'Connor, "Swede "Buster" Carlson, Ken Smouse and others. He pointed out that 50 per cent of his lone class was there. Mr. and Mrs. Ross Christman (Ruth Morgan) brought along a picture of the school and its pupils taken before 1900 when Ruth's mother Fern Orcutt was the teacher there. The picture was taken by Mike Galloway, an early Heppner photographer. As the chancellor dedicated the monument, he acknowledged the good work being done throughout the state by the county historical soc ieties. grants Nine Umatilla and Morrow county firms teamed up with Pacific Gat Transmission Co mpany of Spokane to provide full-tuition scholarships for five Blue Mountain Com munity College students this year, President Ron Daniels announced.
