PACE SEVEN f. i i'.l i Trophies plaques presented For the first time, special awards in the form of plaques or trophies were presented to the most outstanding exhibit in each open class department at the Morrow County Fair. Various individuals and firms throughout the county made the awards possible. The Fruits and Vegetable trophy donated by John and Ann I'rag was won by Jane Rawlins of Heppner. The Heppner Garden Club do nated the flower plaque which was won by Mayko Buchanan of Irrigon. The award for the outstanding commercial ex hibit donated by Blue Mt. PoUtto Growers Council was won by Eastern Oregon Farms. The Sabre Farms award for other commercial crops was won by Harold "Shorty" Peck of Heppner. The Home Economics award given by Eastern Ore ' gon Farms was won by Esther Minnick of Boardman. Cathy Palmer of Heppner won the Teen Corner plaque given by the J S Ranch of Boardman. Children's Corner winner was Anita Palmer of lone. Her award was made possible by the Lindsay Ranch. The Arts, Crafts and Collections award given by Oregon Potato Inc. was won by Pauline Matheny. The Western Sheep award was won by Mark Sargent of Heppner. Grieb Farms of Lexington took the Sabre Farms beef trophy. Aaron Evans of Irrigon won the Sabre Farms Poultry trophy and Lorran Hayes of Heppner won the Sabre Farms Rabbit trophy. Presentations from county fair will be repeated for the state show by Erin Evans, whose "Denim Blues" demon stration won her the county fair overall best presentation award. An outstanding and timely demonstration on how to be in the latest style with scarfs tied in many ways will also be a repeat at state fair by Jan Peterson, lone. In addition, Jan will show them how to make her award winning pie, in the Senior ie Baking Contest. Preparing a luncheon under the watchful eyes of the big audience will be Jyl Hobbs, Irrigon, who received the champion luncheon ribon at county fair. Modeling garments in the public style revue at state fair on Thursday will be Kate Evans, Irrigon and Debra Klaus, Heppner. In the livestock division, Donald Richards will be PGE to construct Boardman RR bridge Public Utility Commissioner Charles Davis has approved a joint request from the Union Pacific Railroad Company and Portland General Electric Company to construct a railroad crossing over Interstate 80N at Castle, near Boardman. The new industrial track will serve a proposed PGE thermal electric generating facility located ten miles south of I-80N. The track will be used for the delivery of materials during construction and for delivery of coal to the plant The facility is scheduled to begin operation in June, 1980. Two bridges will be constructed to support the track where it crosses the divided highway. Cost of the project will be paid by PGE. Active in the "Action Booth" will be Phyllis Piper, Eileen Padberg, Lexington leaders and five members of their Tole Painting club, which won all the champion ship and reserve champion ship ribbons at state fair this1 year. FfllipbKcs Two recipe brochures which show the many ways to use zucchini and green tomatoes are available at all Umatilla and Morrow County Extension offices, reports extension home economist Molly Saul. Home gardeners often are be wildered trying to find dif ferent ways to use the prolific squash. Cool weather may cause an oversupply of green tomatoes. Zucchini recipes include casseroles, relish, quick bread, cookies, sweet pickles, dill pickles, pancakes, fruit bars, chocolate cake, marma lade and salad, in addition to directions for drying. Green tomato recipes in clude dill pickles, mincemeat, fried tomatoes, pie, relish, conserve and marmalade. Mrs. Saul states that all recipes are available at no cost.
