The horse show, slated for 9 a.m. Friday, is organized by the Wrangler's Riding Club and directed by Superinten dent Dick Sherer. The two new ctasses, Eng lish Equitation and Working Horse Hack classes, are des perately needed, according to Nancy Sweek, an area inst ructor in the two classes. "Ileppner, as far as English equitation riding Is concerned, is behind the times," Ms. Sweek, said, adding "if they don't show, they won't be any good." Ms. Sweek said that at the 4-H horse show, every cham pion and every reserve cham pion was an English rider. She said most have a lot to learn but that there are "some pretty good little riders in this county." "I'd like to see some kids start showing in open shows," she said. "I don't know if they want to show and learn or just show 4-H and fair shows and forget It. The only way they can get good is to show." Ten growers promise spuds At least ten commercial growers will enter potato exhibits this year, for the first time, at the Morrow County Fair. According to D.O. Nelson, superintendent of the new category, the reason "we haven't had it before is because we haven't had any potatoes here." Norgold russetts, the early potatoes, will probably be the abundant type, Nelson said, because Netted Gem Russetts have not been harvested yet. Nelson said he was sure the growers would make every effort to come up with some netted gems even if "they dig 'em by hand." Among the exhibitors will be Potato exhibit 10 a.m. Wed. Nelson said that when he fanned wheat and potatoes near the bombing range, there wasn't over ISOO acres of spuds in the county. Now, he says, there are probably 12,000 seres. All the growers contacted by Nelson art from the north end of the county. Ten growers "promised" potatoes. To be eligible, the commer cial growers must produce at least three acres of spuds. The fair exhibit will be 80 pounds of potatoes. large operations such as Sabre Farms, Eastern Oregon Farms, Oregon Potato Incor porated and others. Some smaller, yet still Quality pro ducers like John Prag Three Mile Farms and Merle Carl son will also enter spuds. . Premiums for the new group will be 17.50 for the first, $3 for the second and 13 for third. The exhibits will be In the main fair pavilion. The judging will take place at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, August as. ' , "., , Entries close for the show at 8 p.m. Monday, August 23. To be eligible to enter all horses, an exhibitor must be a Morrow County resident. All horses must be the bona fide property of the exhibitor. Animals must have been owned and kept in Morrow County at least 30 days prior to time of entry. There will be two rings, another change, in halter and performance class, riding si multaneously. Exhibitors must have adequate help should they run into entries that conflict. The two new classes should highlight a full day of horse show. Working hunter hack is an English pleasure class. The rider and horse walk, trot, canter and hand gallop. They also go over two small jumps. English equitation is dif ferent. The horse and rider enter with a posting trot, not a walk like in Western equita tion. A judge will work the horse and rider both ways in walk, trot and canter and then may ask to see figure eight work. Decked out in boots, brit ches, jacket and cap, the riders will add a bit more aesthetic appeal to onlookers. There are many classes offered. Among them are con formation and halter; perfor mance; junior western equi tation; western pleasure; trail class; reining class; pony class; another reining class; English equitation; working cow horse event; working hunter hack; performance horse clover leaf barrel race; champion performance horse and junior calf roping.
