Rietmann, R. LaRue, Mill-man). LAPP program successful The LAPP Program at Heppner Elementary School concluded last week with a tea honoring the volunteers. Over 600 hours were logged by 22 men and women during the program, which began in January. Certificates listing the time each spent listening to child ren read, or in other ways helping with the reading pro gram, were presented. The volunteers also received col orful planters made by first graders, and thank you cards and notes from the children. Also honored for extended volunteer work in the grade school for the past three years was Mrs. Nancy McElhany. The Lapp Project (Listen-Appreciate-Praise Progress) was proposed by Heppner tea chers Pauline Miller and Rachel Dick. They received a Teachers Incentive Grant for the proposal, which enabled them to buy lunches and pay mileage for volunteers, and to refinish or recover donated chairs and buy lamps. The "reading ladies," as the smaller children called the people who worked with them, were led in their donation of time by Irene Swanson, with 86 hours and Faye Ruhl, with 78. Other helpers, some of whom helped in several grade levels, who were honored were Mrs. Carol Kerr, 32 hours; Rev. Ed Dick, who helped In other ways than working with the children, donated 16 hours. Under the terms of the grant, the volunteers, children and participating teachers have rated the program. Reading test scores this May will be compared with scores on the same test by the same children last year. The project will be fully described in a final paper by Mrs. Miller and Mrs. Dick, and available from the Teachers Incentive Pro gram in Eugene for other schools who aree interested In such a project. Volunteers, children, and the two directors have been enthusiastic over the gain In interest in reading this spring. Next year volunteers will again be used in a local unfunded program which will be broadened to include indi vidual drilling in math, help with the individualized spel ling, and help with reading games and drills as well as listening to the children read. After this year's pilot pro gram, both teachers and volunteers are better prepar ed to work together. Next fall teachers who wish to use volu nteers will be asked to list the hours of the day and the type of help they can use; this will be matched by those who wish to help. The following lone grade school and Junior high school girls have qualified for the Junior Olympic Track and Field Meet to be held June 5 at Madison High School, Port land. Midgets (10-11 yr. olds) for the 880 yd. run will be Kris Pettyjohn and Diane Morter; high Jump-Mary Klncaid and Michelle LaRue; 100yd. dash, Anita Palmer and the 6-lb shot Annie Murray. Juniors (12-13 yr. olds( for the 100 yd. dash will be Tammie Shimp; the 220 yd. dash, Tammie Shimp; 880 yd. run, Lisa Meyers; 1 mile race walk, Teena Llndstrom..
