From the Heppner Hi TRACK After a mediocre team per formance at the John F. Kennedy Invitational track meet April 24, the Heppner boys track team came back strong during the following week of competition to earn a first place victory at the Umatilla invitational last Sat urday. The Mustangs finished ninth out of 10 schools at Mt. Angel in the wind and rain. Team scores were Woodburn 106'?, Gervais loe1, John F. Ken nedy 94, Portland Christian 56, Gatlin-Gabel 44, Vernonia 3914, St. Paul 31, North Marion 26, Heppner 22 and Mt. Angel Prep 2. Ray Cate was the high point performer for Heppner with a third in 100, fifth in the 440 and sixth in the 220. Dan Marshall placed second in the discus. Brian Marlin was fourth in the triple jump and Marty Smith, was sixth in the shot put. On April 27 the locals placed second in a five-way meet at Condon. Wahtonka scored 81, Heppner 74, Condon 40, Whee ler County 37 and Sherman County 17. The third playday of the season was held by the Wranglers, Sunday, at the Wrangler field. Winners in the various events are as follows: Six and Under: Barrels, Jason Dougherty, Duane Ball, Jennie Currin and Angie Ashbeck. Poles: Duane Ball, Jason Dougherty, Jennie Cur rin and Angie Ashbeck. Inner Tube race: Jason Dougherty, Angie Ashbeck, Mike Van Schoiack and Robbie Ashbeck. Weatherford Cate and Wade Padberg paced the Mustangs with 15 points each. Cate tied the fastest time among State A schools with a 23.6 clocking in the 220. He also won the 100 with a personal best 10.4 and was on the winning relay teams. Padberg earned blue ribbons in the 440, 880 and relays. Brian Marlin bettered his school record in the triple jump with a 40,5" leap. He scored 13 points also placing in the javelin and was also on the winning relay teams. Steve McLaughlin added 10 points to the Mustang effort. The Heppner boys won the Umatilla invitational meet last Saturday for the third consecutive year. Final team scores were Heppner 113, Umatilla 99'z, Weston Mc Ewen 914, Helix 68, Riverside 50, Wahtonka 45, Condon 44, Columbia of Burbank, WA, 22, and lone 4. Cate and Marlin led Hepp ner scoring with 22'i and 22 points respectively. Padberg added 18. Bryce Powell and Dan Marshall each had 12. Tuesday afternoon the Mus tangs were in Pendleton com peting in a varsity freshman non-team scoring invitational meet. Heppner takes the weekend off and then returns to Pendleton next Monday. May 14-15 is the girls and boys district 7-A meet. Pre liminaries will be held Friday afternoon with most finals slated for Saturday afternoon. The district meet will deter mine qualifiers for the state meet to be held at Lewis and ark College in Portland the following weekend. BASEBALL The Mustangs hosted the Stanfield Tigers in a non league game Saturday, May 1, and were nipped by a score of 8-7. The Tigers started quickly and had a 5-1 lead after 4 innings. BOOKWORMS FINAL MEET The Bookworms will meet on Tuesday evening. May 11, at the home of Lucy Peterson. This will be the group's final meeting for this school year. The Mustangs could only manage to score 1 run in the 7th on a Clay West RBI to make the final score 8 7. Freshman Dennis Peck worked the mound for the Mustangs giving up 7 hits and walking 5 while the fielders committed 4 errors. Presented Life Scout awards were Scott McEwen, Delbert Turner, Perry Coop er, Herman Winter and Ron Young. 1 Dale Holland, Greg Swe eney and Charles Walsingham were presented their First Class Scout awards. Receiving Second Class Scout awards were Mark Walsingham and Doug Hol land. Benson, their daughter June who was enroute to Can ada, their son Joe Stephens and his son, Robert, Portland. This week they were surprised by a visit from former Irrigon residents, Martin and Letha Abkins, Kennewick, WA. A. C. Houghton Elementary School presented a band concert Friday night.
