Heppner, OR, Thursday, April E, 1978 Heppner High Sports t TRACK A new school record and 6 1st place victories were not quite enough last Tuesday as the Heppner boys track team were edged by the thinnest of margins in a six way meet at Condon. Wahtonka of The Dalles won the affair with 65' points. Heppner had 65 followed by Wheeler county 48, Condon 44, Spray 12 and lone 7. Freshman Brian Marlln set a Heppner High School record in the triple jump with a leap of 40'3'V. The old mark set last year by David Allstott, was 40'1V. Martin's effort earned second place. He was also 2nd in the long jump and was on the winning relay teams to score 11 points. Wade Padberg and Ray Cate were high performers with 15 points each. Padberg won blue ribbons in the 440, 220 and relays. Cate captured the 100, 880 and was on the relays. The mile relay team of Steve McLaughlin, Cate, Pad berg and Marlin ran to a season's best of 3:42.2. The sprint relay was made up of the same group. Other place finishers were Marty Smith, 4th In javelin and 5th in shot put; Dan Marshall, 2nd in discus and 3rd in shot; Greg Clow, 5th in discus; Bryce Powell, 3rd in high and low hurdles, and McLaughlin, 2nd in the low hurdles with a season's best of :22.9. The Heppner Mustangs hos ted the Sherman County Huskies, April 13, in their first league game and dropped a 5-0 decision. The Mustangs were stymied by the no-hit pitching of Paul Fritts and plagued by 5 errors in the 2nd inning, In which the Huskies scored 3 runs. Jim Lankford worked the mound for the Mustangs and according to coach Dale Holland "Jim threw one of the best games of the season." Lankford gave up 7 hits, struck out 7 batters and did not walk a batter. Carrie Haynes played first singlet against Becky Rattray and lost 2-8. In second singles. Jeanie Piening defeated Lisa Gonzales in a tie breaker, 9-1. Carol McElligott defeated Tammy Brehaut in third singles 8-3. In doubles, Donna Palmer and Darcy Rea defeated Leah Potter and Cindi Fatland in a tie-breaker, 9-8. The second doubles team of Lori Berg strom and Natalie Tews lost to Hildred Davis and Jeannette Shaw 3-8. Playing third doub les. Arlynda Aldrich and Tammy Tucker lost to Anne Maley and Tami Harrison, 3-8. Susan Thompson and Arlene Cannon played fourth doubles against Mary Neys and Helen Thayer and won 8-2. The fifth doubles match placed Marcia Fluke and Jan Peterson ag ainst Tanis Johnson and Nancy Hartley with Marcia and Jan winners 8-3. There is no admission charge. Obituaries VELA EL'BANKS DEAN EDWARD BROOKS WILLIAM (BILL) FIELDS Vela Violet Eubanks, 85, Oregon City, died Wednesday, April 14. She was born March 21, 1891 at Lexington, OR, the daught er of Joseph and Mary Pad berg Lieuallen. Funeral services were held Monday, April 19, at the United Church of Christ, lone, with the Rev. William B. Graham officiating. Carl and Betty Marquardt sang "The Last Mile of the Way" and "No One Ever Cared for Me Like Jesus", accompanied by Rikka Tews at the organ. Pallbearers were Earl Pad berg, Eldon Padberg, Marvin Padberg, Darrell Padberg, Bill Padberg and Charley Padberg. Concluding services and vault interment were at High View Cemetery, lone, with Sweeney Mortuary in charge of arrangements. Survivors include three sons; John Eubanks, lone; Howard Eubanks, Condon; William Eubanks, Oregon Ci ty; two brothers; Lewis Hal vorsen, lone and Henry Hal vorsen, Medford; sister, Le tha Harr, Pendleton; fourteen grandchildren and twenty great-grandchildren. Over TC2 Tea Cq) By A. Duffer Eight ladies braved the cold last week to participate in the Tuesday morning women's play. Newest players were winners for the day. Low gross went to Lilly Mae Nistad and Pat Lankford had the least putts. Ladies Tuesday evening play began this week and results will be listed next week. Charlie Rawlins was a repeat winner for low gross in the men's Sunday play which was held last Saturday be cause of the Easter holiday. Jeff Edmundson won low net and KP. There was a tie for long drive between Tom Sherer and Craig Cooley. Jerry Daggett and Brian Kerr tied for the dubious honor of high gross. Clint McQuarrie returned from a winters vacation to capture least putts. Wednesday evening saw the beginning of men's Wednes day night team play. Match up and rules for the event are posted for the first nine weeks of play. At present there are 10 teams entered. Dean Edward Brooks died Wednesday, April 7, 1976 at the Walla Walla veterans hospital. Mr. Brooks was born July 18, 1918 at Olney, IL. He had made his home in Kinzua with his daughter, Mrs. Bar bara Williams for the last five years. Mr. Brooks is survived by another daughter, Mrs. Linda James, Pendleton and a son Larry Dean Brooks of Cali fornia and five grandchildren. Several brothers and sister, in Olinois also survive him. Mr. Brooks served in World War II with the Coast Guard and witlrthe U.S. Army during the Korean War. Funeral services were held in Fossil Monday, April 12, 1976. Interment was at the Fossil cemetery. BOYD HINTON Graveside services - were held Monday afternoon at the Monument cemetery for Boyd Hinton with the Rev. Milo Franke, John Day officiating. Mr. Hinton died Friday evening, April 2, 1976 after several years of illness. He was born May 28, 1915 in Hamilton to Henry (Doc) and Effie Stirritt Hinton. He attended grade school in Hamilton and graduated from Monument High School. He was married to May De Ett Throop November 24, 1939 at Goldendale, WA. He is survived by his widow, May, Monument; two daugh ters, Mrs. Charles (Sharon) McKinnon, The Dalles and Mrs. BUI (Mary Ella) Neal near Monument. A sister, Mrs. Ella Kenton, Beaverton, five grandchildren and an uncle George Stirritt, John Day. Funeral services were held Monday, April 12 for William (Bill) Fields who died Thurs day April , 1976 at Blue Mountain Hospital. John Day. Mr. Fields was bora De cember 20. 1878 at Mt. Vernon. He was buried in the Moon Creek Cemetery near Mt. Vernon. He was an uncle of Mrs. Don Capon, Monument, and a long time resident of Grant County. He lived many years in the Courtrock area.
