Page 4, THJE Party The Walkathon was a great success. Mayor Sweeney was not to be out done, nor let those who put money on the "Horse", get away without paying it to the March of Dimes. County Commissioner Warren McCoy, Irrigon, wal ked ten miles taking the place of Judge Paul Jones. Mike Sweeney walked with them as the unofficial county witness. Dean Hunt walked the twenty miles with over eight dollars a mile on him. Dean didn't show up for bowling Monday even ing. To all who made the March of Dimes Walkathon (you kids too) three cheers and hats off to you. Jack Van Winkle's Sears Store is celebrating it's 5th birthday this Friday and Saturday. Jack has a door prize and other free gifts. They will be serving coffee and cookies, and you're invit ed to help Sears celebrate their birthday. I can't help but think, that when they set the clocks back this Sunday, Bill Weatherford still won't know what time to get up in the morning. Will it be four or five a.m. Bill? Met Dr. Tibbies buying paint. For a man who has been in retirement for six months now he looks like it is agreeing with him. Fishing season hasn't opened yet, and Dr. was complaining the opening date was too late this year. Curtis Culp. a former state policeman here, was a visitor last weekend at the Bob Jones home. Curtis and his family are now farming in Canada. The Heppner Swim Team Association will be holding a Rummage Sale at the Gilliam & Bisbee Building Friday and Saturday. Sharon Biddle has reported they have TV sets, a desk, chairs, earners. Bicen tennial items and lots of clothes. Also, after 1 p.m. on Saturday for one dollar, you will be handed a paper bag and all you can fill in the bag. you can keep. The Agri-Rama held at the Elks Lodge this Tuesday drew 'a large number of women, "ables were set up displaying the wares of the wheat, sheep. Ief and potato industries. The Potato Board gave out a cook book titled "The Potato Lover's Diet Cookbook" which when I start to use it, it might put potatoes back on our table. The first recipe will be "potatoe waffles." Now the beef sausage recipe will definitely be used. All in all it was a fun and interesting hour, I was sorry I couldn't stay for the afternoon pro gram. Steve and Diane Partlow, Boardman, Easter dinner gu ests were Tom and Cathy Cutsforth, Corvallis, Lucia Barrett, Lexington, Alta Cuts forth and Barbara and Orville Cutsforth, Heppner. With the Kinzua's tempo rary layoff, more people are seen on the streets. I didn't realize that so many mothers of small children were em ployed by the plywood divi sion. Makes our town look busy. Morrow County Pomona Grange will meet Saturday, April 24, 10:30 a.m., at the Rhea Creek Grange Hall. The Lecturer's Hour which is open to the public, begins at 1:30 p.m. and will celebrate Po mona's first 50 years in Morrow County. There will be reports on beginnings and happenings of subordinate Granges during the past 50 years in Morrow County. C.IR1.S SOFTBALL l.KAGl'E TO START The Willow Creek Girls Softball League is scheduled to begin play on May 8. Volunteers for officiating are desperately needed. The Lea gue would like to give some training sessions and establish an officials pool, but they need willing bodies from both Heppner and lone. HAVE TERRARIl'M WORKSHOP Most of the 12 members who attended the April 12 meeting of the Heppner Garden Club constructed terrariums. The information and guidance for the building of these terrar iums was given by Marvin Zimmerman. Gilliam County extension agent. After a short lecture, he passed out three pages of guidelines with careful in struction regarding terrarium construction, choice of con tainers, soil selection, drain age, recommended plants, planting procedure and care of terrariums. He then proceeded to de monstrate the techniques he uses He in building terrariums. helped each one with suggestions and advice as they arranged their displays. This workshop was preced ed by a short business meeting during which the coming Blue Mountain District No. 10 meeting in Pendleton. Mr. Nelson is a 1972 gradu ate of Oregon State University in Agronomical Crop Science. He served with the U.S. Forces in Europe. He is presently in business with his father who operates a wheat ranch. The wedding will take place June 19, 2 p.m. in the new Bicentennial Chapel at Red stone Arsenal with the father of the bride officiating. and the state convention, Portland were announced. I HEPPNER BRANCH r II Rhea 40th Anniversary More than 100 friends and relatives gathered to help Mr. and Mrs. Carl Rhea observe their fortieth wedding anni versary at the Masonic Tem ple. April U at Echo. Present for the occasion were the Rhea's four children : Mr. and Mrs. Robert Klenke, (Carlene), Erika and Rian, Forest Grove; Mr. and Mrs. Harry Kelley, (Sandy), Harry Carl and Janie, Albany; Steve and Lorl, Lexington. The guest book, attended by Lorl Rhea, was centerd by a beautiful bouquet of spring flowers, a gift from the Gary Grieb family. The Rheas have been employed by the Griebs for 21 years. The serving table was lovely, centered by a white three-tiered cake, decorated with pink roses and topped by a silver 40. ALPHA THETA MEETS. ELECTS OFFICERS Alpha Theta Sorority met at the home of Mrs. Riley Mun kers, with 10 members pre sent. Philanthropic chairman Ri ta Harris reported on the following donations: 4-H scho larship, Pioneer Memorial Hospital, St. Jude Hospital, Camp Meadowood, Fair tro phy and Cystic Fibrosis. Officers elected for the coming year were: President, Faye Wilson; Vice Pres., Betty Heath; Treasurer, Ver na Brinda; Secretary Ramona Marshall; Education, Rose mary Parks. The E.S.A. Silver Tea will be held May 8, at the Columbia Basin Building. Rosemary Parks reported on the District meeting held at Hermiston. Rita Harris was elected District Vice Presi dent. Also helping were Mr. Rhea'a sisters, Mary Ash beck and Marie Hedrick; and the Rhea'a daughters, Carlene Klenke and Sandra Kelley. Mr. and Mrs. Rhea were married on Easter Sunday, April 12, 1936, at the Methodist parsonage in Pendleton by the Rev. Walter Gleiser. Four guests who were present at their wedding 40 years ago were also at the gathering: Lee Connors, Arlington; Nor ma Null,- Hermiston; Mary Ashbeck and Ralph Isackson, both of Pendleton. TOt'R GROUP WILL LUNCH AT CECIL Larry Smitton, an active of ficer of the Umatilla County Historical Society, has infor med members of the Morrow County Society that a Grey hound busload of historians from Pendleton, Pilot Rock and Milton-Freewater will visit Morrow County Satur day. May 15. The touring group will travel as close as possible along the Old Oregon Trail from Pendleton through Echo and on through Morrow and Gilliam Counties to the place where the pioneers crossed the John Day River before turning homeward. They plan to lunch at Cecil and to view the new museum being installed in the old store there. They have invited members of the Morrow County Historical Society and friends to join them there.
