Oregon. Published July 17, 1975 Port off Morrow retains firm The firm of Kidder, Pea body and Company, Inc., will be retained by the Port of Morrow as bonding under writers if bonding is request ed. In its regular meeting the commission last Thursday made the agreement pending an official request from PGE. PGE has indicated they may ask the port for this assistance in financing its $322 million coal-fired generating plant. This would be the first power plant financed by a port. Should this bonding request be made and bonds sold, the Port of Morrow would have the greatest bond debt of any port in Oregon. Morrow County taxpayers would not assume a larger tax load since the utility guaran tees payment of the bonds. Interest payed on the bonds are taxable within the port district. Chinese award Sen. Jernstedt State Sen. Ken Jernstedt, Hood River, was awarded the "Chinese War Memorial Med al" during ceremonies in Los Angeles recently. The medal was presented at the Flying Tigers Reunion by the Chinese Ambassador to the United States. It was in recognition of services per formed by the Flying Tigers in 1941 and 1942. This is the third medal Jernstedt has received from the Chinese for serving in the Flying Tigers. The Flying Tigers received national re cognition in 1941 as a group of American volunteers sent to China to fly special bombing raids against the Japanese. Jernstedt said this is the first time he has received an award for something he did thirty-three years earlier. Re cords were lost or destroyed during the war and the years w hich followed resulted in the long delay. The Flying Tigers Reunion was held in Los Angeles with Neil Armstrong, the first man to walk on the moon, as their honored guest. Armstrong received the Flying Tiger Award which is presented to the person who has made an outstanding contribution to aviation. July 17. 1975 Monument News Last week 'i thunder storm caused 24 lightning Tires in the Monument area, with most in range 27 and all under an acre each. Helicopter was used the 8 through the 10. Power outages in some sections were out for 18 hours and the phones in some areas were out for several days. A 35-mph wind was recorded and .40 of an inch of rain fell in IS minutes during one storm. Several trees were blown down and rain has delayed haying. , Mr. and Mrs. Richard Boyer, Prairie City; Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Maley, Fox, Mr. and Mrs. Mike Weissenfluh and Mr. and Mrs. Roger Weissenfluh, Long Creek were guests at the home of their parents Mr. and Mrs. Jim Cole at the L.S. Ranch Sunday, July 6. The occasion was the Cole's 30th wedding anni versary. All the children were home except the sons Jim and John. They were at the Fall Mountain Lookout east of John Day. Mr. Cole is the rider for the Monument Grazing Assn. Sarah Corley, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. .Lewis Corley of Dale, and Pat West, Long Creek were married Satur day, July 12 at the Long Creek Community Church. Susie Stubblefield and Doreen Boy er were hostesses for a shower for the bride at the Stubble field home on June 30. Mr. and Mrs. Norris Stub blefield and Susie attended a wedding reception at the Elgin Community Hall, Saturday, July 12 for Mr. and Mrs. Earnest Parsons. Mrs. Parsons is the former Linda Kay Stubblefield, dau ghter of the Stubblefields. Mr. Parsons is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Del Parsons of Elgin. They were married May 31 at Reno, Nevada. The bride is a graduate of Monument High School and is now employed at Eastern Oregon Welding Supply while the groom is employed by Boise Cascade, LaGrande. Mr. and Mrs. Herman Schick of Bonners Ferry, Id. recently purchased the former Herman Thompson ranch from the Joe Clarkes. The Clarkes are living on the former Nick Bonifica house in Fox Valley. Mr. and Mrs. Greg Corta beria and Mr. and Mrs. Gayle Engle moved their camp trailers to Meacham where they are falling timber for Patterson Logging Co. Mr. Bill McNiel and son Wayne of Orinda, Ca., return ed home after spending several days at the ranch here, the former Joe Wheeler place. A large crowd of approxi mately 200 people attended the Monument Reunion. A potluck dinner was served and a dance was held in the evening at the gym. Music was furnished by The Logg an berries of Boise. Mr. and Mrs. Bud Engle and Mr. Bill McNeil and Wayne were guests Thursday evening at the Gary Engle home. Mr. and Mrs. Bud Engle celebrat ed their 40th wedding anni versary. Mr. and Mrs. Mike Miksche, Prineville visited last week end at the home of her sister, Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Fitze. Mr. Miksche is the new chair man of the Oregon State Marine Board and the only member of the board from Eastern Oregon. He was elected earlier this year to the position. CYSTIC FIBROSIS CAMPAIGN STARTS Mrs. Riley Monkers has been named chairman of the Breath-of-Life campaign to fight children's lung diseases, according to Pat Straub, 1975 state Campaign Chairman of the Oregon Chapter, Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Mrs. Monkers will lead volunteers in raising funds to support research and care programs The goal for Heppner is $163 with the campaign kickoff with a house-to-house appeal on Sunday, September 14 through Sunday, September 21.
