An announcement waa made of the bicentennial com mitteea plana for the celebra tion at Cecil. Li! Curtis reported that a 181,000 grant haa been receiv ed to improve and maintain basic health care in the Morrow, Gilliam and Wheeler County areas. A coordinator for thia program will be hired In September and based In Foasll. 110.000 of the grant will go to Improve laboratory facilities at Pioneer Memorial Hospital. A qualified person will supervise home care for the elderly in each of the three county aeata beginning in September. Don Cole of the Heppner Lions Club spoke of the carnival that is being brought in conjunction with the county fair. The guest speaker waa Richard Faua, Pendleton, who la with the Sixth Judicial District Legal Aid Society which offers legal help to needy, low -income persona. He said hia aervicea will be included under the National Legal Services Emergency Corporation. His office in Heppner ia in the Bank of Eastern Oregon on alternate Tuesdays and those who would like to consult him or need his aid should set up appoint ments through the Neighbor hood Center. Recreation and woilc part of YCC camp The youthful conservation ists and their advisors of the Tupper Youth Camp learned about the Oregon dessert during the weekend of July 46 Last week they worked on trails and picnic areas around Penland and Bull Prairie lakes and conducted a cone survey. Gary Loeffler ex plained the purpose and meth ods of aesthetic landscape management, and Bill Carter told of the tussock moth and pine bottle infestations and what could be done to control these situations. They visited Mason Reser voir, Granite. Bourne and Whitney and reviewed mana gement practices for the Powder River Valley July 12 13. They also visited the old gold camp museum at Sump ter. Monday they worked at spring site restoration at Tamarack and Government Springs. Tuesday evening they Joined the Bicentennial Wagon Train Celebration at Cecil. Wednesday crews were working at Bull Prairie and Fairview Camp. VS to P beautiful You nmke 14 r.lultfphoslc health screening Free health examinations for preschool and pre-high achool students will be avail able again this year for Morrow County residents Just prior to school's opening, according to Birdine Tullis, Extension Assistant. -.The health screenings will be available under the com-' bined sponsorship of Exten sion Service, County and State Health with two clinics sched uled. The South Morrow Clinic will be held August 26, Heppner Elementary School. Irrigon Elementary School will be site of the August 27 clinic for residents of Irrigon and Boardman. The required health "gold enrod" sheets for school entry will be completed at both clinics and immunizations available for those needing site restoration projects at Tamarack and Government Springs and some will be working at landscaping the Forest Service buildings in Heppner. Tonight their even ing will begin with a picnic at the city park. Later the evening will include sports in the school gym, swimming, library and museum time and general free time for the campers. Tomorrow the workers will be at the Skookurn Exclosure and (he CCC Spring doing , work outlined by the forest service and their counselors. Next weekend some youths miiy go to their homes, but most of the camp will option to backpack to Strawberry Mountain. All will return to Tupper Camp for a Sunday evening snack and campfire. ( Ill W ilts COMBINE FOR SERVICE AND PICNIC Next Sunday, July 20, the United Methodist Churches of . Echo and Heppner will meet together at Cutsforth Park. They will hold morning wor ship at II a.m. and after the service will join in a picnic 1 pot luck. The Rev. Edwin Cutting is t pastor of both of these congregations. This is the first time they have met together for a Sunday service and picnic. The Heppner United Methodist Church has held a congregational picnic on the third Sunday of July for many years, usually in the Court house Park. STORY HOt R Carol Goodin, the story teller with the puppets, will be Monday's story teller at the American Associated Univer sity Women's story hour. The story hour begins at 10 a.m. at the library in Heppner. It is open fqr all children between the ages of four and eight. Ann Doherty and Annette Hagey will be assisting. Miss Nese Kizilkoy will arrive in Boardman July 19 to spend two weeks with the Harold Baker family under the sponsorship of the Inter national Four H Youth Ex change Program. Miss Kizilkoy is a Home Economics Technician for the Ankara Technical Agri cultural office and is interest ed in recreation. American teaching methods, clothing, home improvement, the 4 II programs, and a number of leisure time interests She speaks German, Turkish mid English and comes from a rural background having lived 15 years of her 21 years on a farm. The IFYE program in Turkey is in cooperation with the 4-K section of the Ministry of Agriculture and in the U.S. by the National 4 H Founda tion in behalf of the Extension Service. Mrs. Baker has been a teacher at A C. Houghton School for a number of years. The Bakers have two teenage daughters at home as well as sons in college. .l KSTS FROM (ORVM.I.IS Dr. and Mrs. Roland Dim rnick, Corvallis, visited the Charles Patchings last week. Dr. Dimmick was head of the Fish and Game Department at Oregon State University for many years and hold emeritus rank since his retirement. Mrs. Dimmick is Mrs. Patch ing's aunt.
