The qualifications were made at the district 7 A meet held at Condon last Saturday. In team scoring. Sherman County made a very strong showing in the running events to overcome a strong Heppner bid for the championship. Final overall scoring was Sherman County 129. Heppner 111. Condon 56. Tom Wolff, McLeod and Padberg ran 3:42.7. Other place finishers for the Mustangs were Dan Marshall, third in the discus with 1I7'2"; Wolff, fourth in the 880, 2:09 4; Dave Allstott. fifth in the triple jump. 40-,". and Kil kenny . sixth in the 440 in :56 5. Allstott 's jump in the triple jump is a school record. Although this is a new event for Oregon schools, there have been H H S triple jumpers against Washington schools. Charlie McElligott. lone, also earned a trip to the state meet placing second in the low hurdles with a time of :2I 4 in finals peted at Ihe national finals all four of her college years and in 1972 won the National Barrel Racing at the finals at lioicman. She is 4th in the all-around standings and 2nd in barrel racing in her region She is eligible to compete in barrels, break -aw ay roping and goal tving. In the calf roping event Dav id Daly won the fifth place spot and Jerry Gentry placed sixth Jack Yocom placed third in the bull riding competition. Cindy Dougherty and Jerry Gentry placed fifth in Ihe team roping event. In Ihe over all competition. Redmond High School placed first and Baker won second place honors. Heppner Finished behind first place Sherman with 149 points and Echo with 48 points; Heppner had 40 points. Five of the Heppner Fillies earned the right to participate in the state track meet. May 1617 at Pleasant Hill by placing either first or second in their respective events. The girls who qualified are Janice Healy, Teresa Peck, Taml Toll. Deb Cox and Molly Pierce. Janice Healy threw the shot ' put 34 5" to win first place and set a new school record. Tami Toll set a new record in the long jump with a leap of 161", and Diane Holland threw the discus 81'')" for another record. The 880 yd. relay team placed second behind Sherman with a time of 2.01.2. Members of the team are Teresa Peck. Tami Toll, Deb Cox and Molly Pierce. The fillies placed third in the 440 yd. relay, with a time of 53.6. another new school record. Members of this team include Tami Toll, Deb Cox. Kimee Haguewood and Teresa Peck. lone loses tennis match In the last match of the season, the lone tennis team traveled (0 Echo, Tuesday. May 6 and lost the team match by split sets. In the boys singles. Kim Gutierrei was defeated by John Cohn 6 3, 2. and 5-7. In Ihe second singles Rick Gil bert defeated Garth Price in split sets, 63. 3 6. 6-2. Milton Morgan, lone, showed colored slides wilh accom panying narration at their May 8 luncheon. He answered questions about wheat sales past and about possible sales in the future. Morgan spoke as a director and past president of Western Wheat Associates. He has visited Ihe oriental markets w here members of the Oregon Wheat Growers and the Wheat league went to show the people how to use wheat flour. It took skillful promotion to develop these markets. Japan now imports a large amount of wheat and 53 per cent of it is from the United Slates. He said thai about 85 per rent of the wheat yield of the northwestern slates has to be exported About 65 per cent of the total U.S. crop is exported-only a small per centage of Ihe total production is used for human consump tion in this country. Morgan says he enjoys bringing the wheat in Asia story to the public. The citation stemmed from his throwing and dump ing garbage In the hallways of Heppner High School, He appeared in Justice Court before Justice of the peace Dee Cribble. Prock w as sentenced to either pay a fine of $100. and spend two con secutive weekends in Jail or lo work for a period of one week helping Ihe county main tenance man clean up Anson Wright Park and the area around Ihe courthouse. Prock chose lo work out his sentence and started work officially without pay Monday His hours at Ihe courthouse are from Bam. to 3 30 pm.
