NEW RECIPE FOLDER The Oregon Beef Council has published an attractive recipe folder full of beef cooking ideas. "Budget Buy ers Beef Bargains" features easy to follow recipes with a variety of cooking methods that will delight any cook . . particularly the economically-minded. Every recipe can be prepared for 50 cents a serving or less. That's quite a bargain! There's a $100 reward out for information leading to the discovery of the national champion Douglas fir tree somewhere in Oregon. And the Oregon State Department of Forestry is organizing The Big Tree Hunt in an effort to capture this and other nation al champions belreved to be lurking somewhere in Oregon forests. Why would Keep Oregon Green Assn. offer a $100 reward for a Douglas fir? And why would the Department of Forestry organize The Big Tree Hunt? Shame. Oregon, known world-wide for its Douglas fir forests doesn't even hold title to the national champion Doug fir. Oregon, with over half its land in forests is running a slow fifth among other states in the number of champion-sized trees within its boundaries. But that condition will not continue. Oregon has 75 native tree species. Oregon holds title to only 39 national champions as listed in the American Forestry Associa tion's Social Register of Big Trees. Thirty-six more champs will restore Oregon to its proper position in the big tree world. The Department of Forestry is asking all hikers, bird watchers, boaters, skiiers and golfers to keep an eye peeled for the champ that could get them and Oregon Into the Social Register. Information regarding present champs' measurements and how to measure a tree for competi tion may be obtained in a brochure entitled: "The Big Tree Hunt", available from all State Department of Forestry offices. The $100 reward offered by Keep Oregon Green will be given to the first person to have entered into AFA's Social Register a national champion Douglas fir on Oregon soil. The present champ, enthroned in Wash ington, is 45'5" in circumfer ence. 221' tall, with a crown spread of 61". The Oregon find must top this measurement. But don't bring him in dead or alive. Only healthy, living trees will make the Register. SQUARE DANCING Open to Public, especially beginners Odd FeEows Hall Sunday, May 4, 730 pjn.
