Pullman Irrigon The engineers evaluation of construction bids for water system improvements was considered by Ihe Irrigon City Council at their regular meet ing Feb, II, No action was taken although a recom mendation had been made for an award to the apparent low bidder. Clarification of time elements relating to financing caused the delay. A special council meeting was called Thursday when ordinances were passed con cerning issuing and advertis ing of general obligat ion bonds for sale. Mayor Chester Wilson appointed Pauline Johnson. Robert Judd. and Warren Prouty on a Citizens involve ment committee for land planning and updating a comprehensive plan and zon ing ordinance. Other appoint ments will be made for a six-member group to work with Ihe planning commission and Ihe council. Informal ion concerning housing and urban develop ment was presented by Mayor Wilson, who attended a county meeting concerning grant funds. An initial move for a sewer sy stem was suggested and that a preapplication form be filed lor available grant funds. The council moved to apply for a position of utility man trainee under Ihe Comprehen sive Employment and Train inn Act Mayor Chester Wilson and members of toe Citizens Involvement Committee and menitieis of the City Council, including .Robert Judd. New phone books out Pacific Northwest Bell started delivering 24.400 new telephone books in Pendleton, Athena. Weslon. Helix. Her mislon. Umatilla, Stanfield, Echo, lleppner. lone. Lexing ton and Millon-Freewater areas. Feb. 18. "This ear there w ill be only one directory delivered to each residence." said Dale Slusher. PNfi manager. "This is an eflorl by PNB to save paper and money, and to eliminate as many unneces sary phone books as possible." Special inserts in the books explain that anyone needing more directories should feel free fo call the number listed on Ihe insert to request additional hooks. "As a result of this new policy, PNB expects to deliver some .t.oon fewer books in this area than were handed out last year." Slusher noted. Most of the new phone books will lie hand delivered by a private contractor. Product Ivvelnpment Corporation, lleppner customers will re ceive theirs by mail. A few directories also w ill be mailed lo remote locations. The new edition features a new directory assistance number for Pendleton. Cus tomers are instructed lo dial "411" instead of "113." Slu sher explained this is part of a lone -term plan to phase out "113" in Oregon. llermislon's D A. number still is listed as "113." But that number w ill change in March when a new electronic tele phone system goes into ser vice there.
