ttustags drop cliff hanger
flo Sherman County, 55-49
With less than a minute left
to play the Heppner Mustangs
committed three fouls that
cost them the ball game as
they were defeated by the
Sherman County Huskies, 55
49, Saturday night at the
Mustang gymnasium.
After battling for nearly five
minutes in the first period to
get on the board and even the
score at 2-2, the Mustangs and
Huskies both played a fine
defensive game to finish the
quarter with the Mustangs
having a one point lead, 9-8.
In the second quarter both
teams continued their defen
sive game and the Huskies
managed to pull ahead of the
Mustangs. The Mustangs tied
the game at 19 all with 3 : 16 left
in the period, only to have the
Huskies take the .tad as the
half ended. 26-21.
In the third period the
Huskies continued to lead the
Mustangs, but the Mustangs
continued to battle them man
for man and basket for basket.
The third period ended with
the Huskies having a six point
lead. 42-36.
Then came the four quarter,
with the Mustangs going all
out for the win. With 5:22 left
in the game the Mustangs had
narrowed the lead to four
points. 46-12, and then with
1:55 left in the game the
Mustangs took a one-point
lead. 47-46. Another Mustang
basket and they increased the
lead by three points. 4946,
only to have the Huskies come
back and tie the game at 49 all
wilh less than one minute left
to play.
Husky Dennis Macnab was
fouled and he two for two to
give the Huskies a 51-49 edge
over the Mustangs. In their
anxiety, the Mustangs again
fouled Macnab and he sailed
two more points through the
hoop to increase the Huskie
lead to four points. Another
foul by the Mustangs put the
icing on the cake for the
Huskies as with only six
seconds left they had a
six-point lead.

The game was a thriller all
the way and a hard one for the
Mustangs to lose. However,
the Mustangs had to play
catch-up ball most of the game
as they were only able to lead
the Huskies in the first period,
and again in the last quarter,
and both times they could not
maintain the lead.

How come?
Within the past weeks of the basketball season under way,
readers have complained that the Gazette-Times has not
published the scores of games, especially the junior varsity
games.
The Gazette-Times has telephoned the various schools In
Morrow County in an effort to enlist their cooperation in
calling in the scores of their games, but we have not been
able to find anyone at the schools willing to assume this
responsibility. It is impossible for our small staff to attend all
the games played in the county; thus our only source of
information is the schools. We cannot and will not rely upon
accounts published in other newspapers.
We again urge the schools in the county to cooperate in
reporting results of their athletic contests, as well as other
school activities. Our readers want this news, we want the
news. And if we are willing to devote the space to such items,
cannot someone at each school make himself available to
provide us with the news?
Perhaps the coach, assistant coach, a member of the team
or a student proficient in reporting game statistics could be
persuaded to report direct to the Gazette-Times. If so. it
would be appreciated by all our readers.
During the weeks to come, if you do not see the results of
your school's games in the Gazette-Times, at least you will
know that we have tried to bring this important news to you.
