Conservation men to be honored The Pine Eagle Spartans killed stale championship hopes of the Heppner Mus tangs Saturday in the quarter final playoff game at Halfway, 19 7. The Spartans kicked off to the Mustangs and managed to hold them until a pass from Gentry to McLeod put the Mustangs within their op ponent's 20 yard line. On the next series of plays the Spartans intercepted a pass from Gentry intended for McLeod to halt the Mustang drive. The Spartans were unable to move (he ball effectively against the Mustangs and the first quarter ended in an 0-0 deadlock. In the second quarter the Mustangs marched down to the Spartan 13 yard line, and as Wade Padberg headed for the end zone he was hit hard and fumbled the ball on the Spartan two yard line, with the Spartans recovering the fumble. The Spartans moved the ball well, and on a first and ten from their own 40 yard line a short pass from Robertson to Whiteley, good for five yards, enabled Whiteley to pick up blockers and go 55 yards for the first Spartan TD. The conversion was good and the Spartans led the Mustangs 7-0 as (he half ended. In the third quarter the Spartans took the kickoff, and on the opening series of plays marched downfield. A short pass from Whiteley to Dennis was good for 19 yards and another Spartan score. The PAT was wide of the uprights, and Pine Eagle had a 13-0 lead. An onside kick by the Spartans was good. They managed to retain possession of the ball. However, the Mustangs halted the drive and they were forced to punt. The Mustangs took possession of the ball and marched 64 yards downfield, ending their drive with a 10 yard pass, Gentry to Eckman, for the score. The PAT was good and the Mustangs trailed 13-7 as the third quarter ended. In the fourth quarter White ley managed to break loose and score for the Spartans on a 49 yard run.
