Heppner, Ore., Gazette-Times, Thursday, Aug. 22, 1974 Page 5 The Bunchgrassers This is a history of Lexington, Morrow County, Oregon, a book that fills a long-felt need in the chronicled history of the county. It is an historical narrative and features the City of Lexington throughout its 175 pages ... its settlement and growth; its contributions to county leadership; and its decline all accurately presented by the man most competent to do so, Sam G. McMillan, a third generation Lexington pioneer. McMillan lived in Lexington until 1955. He is on the faculty of Mt. Hood Com munity College, Gresham. The Oregon Historical Society, Oregon State Archives, The Oregonian newspaper, Morrow County Court House records, personal interviews and individual family records provide the authority and histori cal fact for THE BUNCHGRASSERS. ' The history of Lexington is told in color ful and often humorous fashion by a good , storyteller. There is also a section on the pioneer families of the area. Any person with ties to Oregon should read this book. THE AVAILABLE AT GAZETTE-TIMES Morrow County Museum and the Morrow County Court House C3 Scouts bad: from tamp ? Hi ,. - v h 1 It . V-I Sixteen Heppner Boy Scouts are back from the Wallowa Mountains after having explored 13 lakes, covered 70 miles on foot, and climbed to the,9,595-foot summit of Eagle Cap. The boys were accompanied by Scoutmasters Del Piper and Glenn Ward, with Herman , Winter assisting. The only casualty was a wound that required only one Band-Aid from the first-aid kit. A troop of Tigard scouts were not so fortunate. Two of them fell on the Eagle Cap glacier and were injured so badly they had to be rescued by helicopter. Wednesday night the group experienced snow, hail and sleet. Thursday (hey awoke to heavy fog that covered the mountain tops. The troop's base camp was established at Sunshine Lake. Glenn Ward instructed the scouts on flora and fauna of the area. Tim Hedman and Mark Walsing ham caught 106 fish to add to the hikers' menu. Piper had high praise for the boys, who displayed "great stamina" and gained a great appreciation of the wilder ness. The group included Troy Borst, Tim Hedman, Dale Holland, Steve Marlatt, Scott McEwen, Steve McLoughlin, John Patching, Mark Piper, Charles Rawlins, Greg Sweeney, Mark Walsingham, Ron Ward, Herman Winter Jr., and Bruce and Ron Young. Fifteen scouts qualified for the 50-mile hike merit badge; one with a sore throat had tc drop out. (il'KST SPEAKER AT CHRISTIAN' ( IIIRCH Rev. David Crook, Chehalis.
