In 1973, the U.S. alone shipped 185,ooo head of cattle, plus 35 million pounds of beef to Canada." The Oregon Cattlemen's Association is once again asking the president to take note of this situation and immediately re-impose the Meat Import Quota Act of 1964, which has been sus pended since 1972. Davis added, "Total cattle numbers have increased in Australia, New Zealand and other major beef exporting countries. The U.S. today is the only country which does not have a beef import quota system, most other countries have a complete embargo or have limited imports. Thus, the U.S. is the 'dumping ground' for foreign beef. "We already have an over abundant cattle supply and thus we simply cannot take additional beef supplies from foreign countries without dangerously depressing our own markets, sending cattle prices, received by the feeder and producer, plummeting while inflated productions costs, particularly feed costs, 3 Ft will add to the cattlemen's serious financial problem." Davis concluded, "We have no choice but to ask for and seek a reasonable regulation ' of beef imports, for the good of the cattle industry and the consumer." Also speaking at the annual meeting was Donald Ostensoe, executive staff officer of the Cattlemen and Beef Council, who said, "Consumers in Oregon and Washington were purchasing considerably more beef per capita than one year ago. For the first six months the Northwest consumers have purchased 58 pounds of beef per person as compared to 54 pounds of beef per person for the first six months of 1973." Oregon and Northwest con sumption for the first six months of 1974 were running approximately three pounds above the national per capita average. Ostensoe credited this in crease beef consumption to a hard hitting, consumer oriented beef promotion and advertising of the Oregon Beef Council. Ostensoe said that if this trend continues, we will reach the all time high of per capita of beef consumption of 116 pounds per person which was recorded in 1972. Last year, 1973, per capita beef consumption dropped for the first time in 22 years to 110 pounds per person. .Ian dies from gunsbof wound Henry W. Jackson, 82, formerly of Vale, Ore., was found shot to death at Hard man early Monday night, the apparent victim of a self inflicted gunshot wound. The body was found by Mike Stickney, 20, Hillsboro, Ore., who had just come to Hard man from Portland. Dr. L.D. Tibbies, Morrow County medical investigator, said the victim died from one shot fired from a 32-caliber automatic pistol. The bullet entered one temple and passed through the other. Dr. Tibbies recovered the bullet imbedded in the wall of an old woodshed across the street from the Hardman Opry House, where the tragedy occurred. Jackson apparently died some time late Saturday night. Jackson arrived in Hard man Friday night and asked permission to park his home made camper along the road way near the Opry House. Art and Judy Cutshall are new residents of lone, making their home temporarily in the Holtz Apartments. They have two children, Bret, 4, and Becky, 7, and are most recently from the Portland area. Cutshall has purchased the Office Tavern during which he mentioned he would soon be 83 years of age. One resident reported he was despondent over the resignation of President Nixon. The body was taken to Sweeney Mortuary. The sheriff's office has been unable to locate any survivors other than his estranged wife who resides in Vale. Efforts to locate any other kin is continuing.
