Page 4 IONE The Rev. Edgar Luther will be guest speaker Sunday, July 21. at the United Church of Christ in lone. Rev. Luther is one of the special speakers scheduled to give the morning worship services while Rev. Bill Arthur and family are on vacation. Rev. and Mrs. Luther and their two children are spend ing part of their furlough in Oregon after completing a tour of duty in Rhodesia, he served as urban advisor with the United Church of Girist and taught at the United Theological Seminar. Mr. and Mrs. Charles O'Conner attended the sum mer meeting of the district postmasters of Eastern Oregon. Mr. and Mrs. Leo Crabtree went to Tacoma recently to attend the wedding of their granddaughter, Lou Ann. to Wayne Qunell, Tacoma. The ceremony took place at St. John's of the Woods Church, Saturday. July 13. They were also guests at the rehearsal dinner given at the Qunell home the previous evening. GARDEN CLUB The lone Garden Club met at the home of Mrs. Fredric Martin Wednesday. July 10. A potluck luncheon preceded the business meeting President Mrs. Lee Petty john gave a demonstration on starting plants for terrariums and listed the many plants that do well in terrariums. several of which can be found in this area. Club membei-s were re minded of the terrarium workshop in September. Mrs. Gene Nelson gave the list of "What to do in the Garden" for the month of July, and Mrs. Van Hubbard presented a program on "How to Attract Wildlife to Your Back Yard." The program included several plans for trees, plants, shrubs and berries to attract the kinds of wildlife one wants. The next meeting of the Garden Club will be at the home of Mrs. Van Hubbard, Aug 14. at 1:30 p.m. Topic of discussion will be the prepar ation of flowers for fair exhibits, led by Mrs. Cecil Jones. "The McDaniel reunion will be held Sunday. July 21. at An son Wright Park. A potluck luncheon will be held at 1 p.m. with all relatives and friends invited to attend. Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Halver son, Mrs. Larry Prock and Donna Rea attended a wedd ing reception for Mr. and Mrs. Jim Wiegand in Portland Sat urday. Visiting a week at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Roy W. Lind strom recently was Lind- strom's sister, Mrs. Otto Mor- tenson and her husband of Palm Springs. Ca. Mr. and Mrs. AJ Brazell and family. Castle Rock, Wa., are spending several days with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Martin. The Brazells will be helping with harvest. Mrs. Alva Mason is here visiting her daughter, Mrs. Roy A. Lindstrom. and fam ily. Mrs. Mason and son Jerry arrived Sunday. Jerry is working at the Fred Nelson Ranch. COFFEE HONORS VISITORS Mr. and Mrs. Neil Shur man. Aptos, Ca., and Mrs. Robert Rizzio. Richmond, Ca., were guests last week at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Halvorsen. A coffee hour for Mrs. Shurman and Mrs. Rizzio was given Friday afternoon at the Halvorsen home. Attend ing were Mrs. Vida Heliker, Mrs. Vera Rietmann. Mrs. Ruby Roberts, Mrs. Fannie Griffith. Mrs. Clell Rea, Mrs. Edith Nichoson and Mrs. Larry Prock. all of Ione. Attending from Heppner were Mrs. Harland McCurdy, Mrs. Claude Graham and Mrs. Ella Smith; and from Arlington, Mrs. John Krebs. The 4-H Ione Trail Riders met Monday at the Dick Shears home. Group leader Mrs. Del LaRue and 12 mem bers were present to work on showmanship in preparation for the fair. Next meeting will be Monday, July 22. at 4 p.m., at the Lee Palmer home. Joe Halvorsen left July 12 for two weeks duty with the National Guard. He will be stationed in Yakima this week and Seneca the next. Lexington The Committee on Women's Activities of the Lexington Grange met Tuesday at the home of Mrs. Norman Neison, starting with a potluck salad luncheon. Guests for the afternoon were Flossie Ball, Pamona chairman. Hazel Car- penter of Boardman, and Valda Smith of Hermiston. The door prize was won by Mrs. Carpenter. The next meeting will be at the Flor ence McMillan home. Three Links Club of Holly Rebekah Lodge met at the home of Mrs. Willam J. VanWinkle Thursday with the following members present; Helda Yocom, Ruth Robinson, Deipha Jones, Catie Padberg, Irene Padberg, Dimple Mun kers, Maureen Davis, Flor ence McMillan, Liela Palmer and the hostess. Plans were made for the Sidewalk Bazaar and for doing some handcrafts Sidewalk no place for bikes There will be no more bi cycle riding on Main Street be tween Baltimore and May Streets. Police Chief Dean Gil-' man warned today. Older citizens have been complaining to him that youngsters, especially those on 10-speed bikes, have been endangering pedestrians on the sidewalks when they should be riding them in the street. City Ordinance 361 prohibits riding bicycles on these three blocks of Main Street. The ordinance states that first offenders will have their bicycles impounded for a period of seven days: 30 days' impoundment for second of fenders. Gilman said he will be en forcing the ordinance im mediately . ADVISORY GROUP ELECTS MRS. GEORGE GRIFFITH The lone Advisory Commit tee met Thursday at the high school. Del LaRue, Mrs. Jerry Ste fani and Gail Hermann disj cussed with the committee the elementary and secondary physical education program. The committee reviewed the teaching and extra-curricular assignments of the new staff members and discussed bus routes for next year. It was noted that John Marick was hired for the month of July for school summer maintenance. Mrs George Griffith was elected committee chairman for 1974-75. The public is invited to attend the next meeting of the committee, Aug. 1, 8 p.m., at the high school. MOTORCYCLE MISHAP INJURES WOMAN A single motorcycle ac cident early Saturday night sent Linda Murdock, Quincy, Wa., to Pioneer Memorial Hospital for emergency treat ment. Mrs. Murdock was riding on a motorcycle driven by her husband when the cycle went out of control as he rounded a curve in the vicinity of the Chapin Guard Station. She was released from the hospital the following day. and quilting. Door prize was won by Dimple Munkers. Scott Crabtree is visiting his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Palmer, from his home in Alaska. Scott Davis is recuperating at home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Gaylord Davis, from a broken leg received in a motor bike accident. He spent a night in Pioneer Memorial Hospital where he received medical attention. Mrs. Betty Crissman spent several days last week in North Powder visiting her mother. Donald VanWinkle from Las Angeles visited his parents one day last week. A family get together was held July 3 at the C.C. Jones ranch honoring Mr. and Mrs. G.E. Irvin on their . 25th wedding anniversary. Present were Mrs. Florence McMillan, Mr. and Mrs. Stuart Smith and family of Hermiston, Mr. and Mrs. Dale Whitney and Kim mberlee of Portland, Vicky Walden of Portland, Mrs. Vic Groshens and children of Heppner. Mr. and Mrs. Ken neth Jones, Mr. and Mrs. C.C. Jones. John Spence and the honored couple, Mr. and Mrs. Irvin. who make their home in Pendleton. Mrs. Freda Majeske and Florence McMiflan attended the Weinke funeral in Pendle ton Wednesday of last week. Miss Weinke was a niece of Mrs. Majeske. Mr. and Mrs. John Edwards were Spokane visitors over the weekend. Mr. and Mrs Joe Yocom attended the Pee Wee Rodeo in The Dalles on the weekend. Two contracts have been tenatively approved to two construction contractors. One has been approved for underground line projects. One project includes a new feeder from the Heppner substation which will serve East Heppner, Hinton Creek, Little Butter Creek, Vinson area and the Gurdane Area. One project will be an underground line up Black Mountain. Another job will be the replacement of 1.3 miles of old line now closely along the Lexington-lone Highway, and this will go underground. Another major contract has been awarded for several overhead line projects. It win include conversion of 9 miles of line south and west of Condon from 2400 volt to 7200 volt standard construction. There will also be 30 miles of line in the Lonerock area converted from 7200 volt to 14.400 volt. Along with the conversion work, there will be 18 tap lines removed at various locations but pri marily in the Condon area. These long lines have gen erally not been in use for 10 to 12 years and are not desired to be retained by the present property owners.
