Heppner, Ore., Gazette State finals in buffalo, zonio riding afl World championship buffulo riding, zonie bucking and three days of rodeo action will be packed into the state championship finals of the Oregon High School Rodeo Association at Burns June 28-30. An expected 300 contestants will be competing on tough RCA approved Brahma bulls, bareback horses and saddle broncs. Slock will be provided by Ralph Stevens of Midvale, Idaho. Oregon Fryer Commission will be serving barbecued chicken dinners each day from open pits, a big carnival will be operating, dances are planned, and gigantic fly-in of aircraft from six western stales will add to festivities. Three lop winners in each of the 14 arena events will qualify for competition later this summer in the nation rodeo championships. Sponsoring the Oregon Slate Rodeo is the Burns Elks Lodge. During the three days of arena action, fans in the stands will receive 15 five band radios from numbers drawn of ticket stubs. Major prize to be awarded fans the final day is an all expenses paid six day trip by jet to New Orleans on Dec. 28. Buffalo riding and zonie bucking, are open events for cowboys from Western United States ranches, and is an extra attraction added to the daily performance. The wild zonies, half zebra and half pony, are vicious buckers and few cowboys have ever stayed the limit of lime on their back. Buffalo are rounded up on the vast domain of Harney County's Ponderosa Ranch for the event. World's Champion buffalo rider is expected to again enter and defend his title. Pirates fall to Sherman A one-hitter for Ken Melzer of Sherman County kept the Riverside Pirates off the basepaths April 27 when they went down to defeat, 6-0. Seventy-five 4th through 8th grade girls will be playing slow pilch Softball May through June due in large part to the hard work of Martha Doheriy. Sponsoring organi zation for the program is the Heppner branch of the Ameri can Association of University Women, bui Mrs. Doheriy has organized the teams, located coaches, assistants and offi cials, set up the schedule and solicited funds. The first game is scheduled for Tuesday, May 7. The last game of the season will be Thursday, June 27. Games will be played on Tuesdays and Thursdays beginning at 6:30 p.m. Locations for the games are the lower field at the Heppner Elementary School, the Lexington field, and the field at the lone school. More officials to call the games are badly needed. Six are needed in Heppner and three or four more in lone. Every girl who turned out for the clinics held earlier in April was placed on a team. Coaches for (he Heppner teams are Jerry Rood assisted by Donna Bergstrom, Dawn Sluchell assisted by Barbara Johnson, Judy Gochnauer as sisted by Jean Bennett and Karen Dubuque and Glen Ward assisted by Joyce Ward and Nadine O'Brien. The Mustangs initiated scoring with a four-run 3rd inning. The next inning Con don came back with two runs, but the Mustangs settled matters with what proved to be the winning run in the bottom of the 4th. Heppner pitcher Jerry Gen try continued to hold the Blue Devils in the 5th and 6th and allowed another double tally for Condon in the 7th on the way to his four-hit win. Gentry struck out eight and walked nine in gaining the nod. Heppner's explosive innings came as the result of 10 Heppner hits coupled with 7 errors by the losing team. 67 attend LL Tryouts for aspiring Little Leaguers were held last Satur day in conjunction with a baseball training clinic con ducted by Heppner High School Baseball Coach Dale Holland. Holland reported that 67 boys ranging in age from 9 to 12 from lone. Lexington and Heppner were present for instruction.
